The Circulation Services Manager d irectly supervises library staff. Oversees the operations of the Circulation Division at the downtown library branch to meet exceptional customer service expectations and service goals. This position works under general direction.

Essential Functions

  • Manages the work of professional, technical, and/or other staff; determines organizational structure, staffing needs, and work strategies; ensures adequate resources are available for staff to perform work duties; and ensures that assigned operations and activities comply with organization goals and objectives.

  • Coordinates and directs the workflow for Circulation Services at the downtown library, such as item check-in, check-out, the collection of fees, and staff efforts to promote the check-out of print, audiovisual, and digital materials. Ensures questions from customers are being addressed appropriately. Responds to and resolve customer complaints or refer customers to the appropriate personnel. Oversees the Circulation Division's budget to align with department priorities.

  • Audits daily financial transaction reports, library cards, credit and refund reports, patron access computer financial reports, and other documentation. Identifies discrepancies in daily reports and resolves irregularities within the guidelines of established policies and protocols. Resolves inconsistencies related to patron accounts in the Integrated Library System (ILS).

  • Interprets and applies library policies and procedures to coordinate with staff in other divisions at other branch locations and other Lynx Consortium libraries to resolve complicated circulation issues that may impact multiple locations or institutions.

  • Supervisory responsibilities: Employees in this position are authorized to recommend and/or effect the full range of duties (with appropriate managerial review), including hiring, performance evaluations, transferring, promoting, assigning of significant duties, rewarding, disciplining, and terminating employment; exercise independent judgment to direct others work and have the authority to take corrective action; and, utilize people skills to communicate, motivate and direct or oversee a person, group, department, or organization.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Master's degree in library science or a related field and five years of experience working in a library or related setting as an individual contributor and/or supervisor, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • public library management, services, collections, practices, and procedures

  • integration of technology and public services

  • supervisory and management practices

  • public access catalogs and office software.

Ability to:

  • provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers

  • use excellent communication and time management skills

  • supervise and motivate a professional and support staff

  • interpret and apply policies and procedures

  • evaluate situations and determine an appropriate course of action

  • communicate effectively in the English Language at a level necessary for efficient job performance

  • perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Master's degree in information and library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school and five years of experience in a professional library position along with three or more years of supervisory experience.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, frequently lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds, and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds, and rarely pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds. The noise level is always moderate. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, smell, and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Working Environment

The work environment will include inside conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist, and gases or other airborne matter. Occasionally pushes loaded carts over uneven sidewalks in inclement weather while avoiding traffic (vehicles and pedestrians).

This position works a schedule that includes a mix of day, evening, and weekend shifts on a rotating basis. May work on city holidays.
