This position is part of Digital Transformation department and is suitable for remote workers who can work within the Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone.

PURPOSE

The Principal Industrial Data Architect plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and managing data architecture solutions that support the Sylvamo’s manufacturing operations. This position is responsible for ensuring the seamless integration of data across various industrial systems, including IoT platforms, manufacturing execution systems (MES), enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, asset performance management systems, control systems and other critical business applications. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of industrial data processes and protocols, strong technical skills, and the ability to drive data strategy in alignment with the company’s digital transformation initiatives.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Industrial Data Architecture

  • Provide global, enterprise-level guidance and strategy for Sylvamo’s operational technology architecture.

  • Lead the creation of a scalable and consistent industrial data architecture that supports mill and manufacturing operations, ensuring data is accessible and reliable across the organization.

  • Oversee the integration of various industrial systems, such as IoT, MES, and ERP, to ensure smooth data flow and real-time availability.

  • Develop and maintain data models and schemas to support industrial applications and business intelligence, ensuring data is well-structured for current and future needs.

  • Implement processes to standardize and contextualize data from different sources, making it easier to analyze and use in decision-making.

  • Ensure data security through robust measures and maintain compliance with industry regulations and standards.

  • Ensure implementation of robust data security measures, including encryption, access controls, and auditing, to protect sensitive industrial data and ensure compliance with privacy and cybersecurity standards.

  • Manage the integration of on-premise data systems with cloud solutions, leveraging the best of both environments for data processing and storage at the optimal cost.

  • Establish and enforce data governance practices to maintain data integrity, quality, and consistency.

  • Continuously monitor and work with infrastructure and database teams to optimize data architecture for performance and cost-effectiveness, ensuring the architecture evolves with business needs.

  • Ensure that data backup and disaster recovery strategies are in place supporting business continuity and data availability in the event of system failures or other disruptions.

Strategy

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define and implement industrial data strategy and governance policies that align with the company’s goals, focusing on data democratization, security, and compliance.

  • Evaluate and recommend data technologies, tools, and platforms that best meet Sylvamo’s needs, staying up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in data architecture and analytics.

  • Collaboratively develop and/or support the development of AI and machine learning use cases that leverage industrial data to drive predictive maintenance, process optimization, and other advanced analytics initiatives.

  • Continuously explore and experiment with emerging technologies, tools, and methodologies to enhance data architecture capabilities and drive innovation within the organization.

  • Promote a culture of data-driven decision-making across the organization, providing guidance and support to teams in leveraging data for strategic and operational decisions.

  • Anticipate future growth and scalability requirements, ensuring that the data architecture can support increased data volumes and additional data sources as the business evolves.

Transformation Alignment

  • Lead the integration of data from IoT devices, sensors, and advanced process controls into the data architecture, ensuring seamless data collection, monitoring, and control within industrial operations.

  • Oversee the connectivity and data flow between IoT systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and other enterprise applications to enable real-time analytics and optimization.

  • Design and implement the integration of Asset Performance Management systems into the industrial data landscape, ensuring that data from various sources, including sensors and control systems, is utilized for predictive maintenance, asset health monitoring, and performance optimization.

  • Remain mindful of other transformational areas of focus such as supply chain and commercial strategies and their bridge into the overall data architecture, leveraging experience in manufacturing to support broader business objectives.

  • Promote methodologies that foster modern thinking and efficient project execution, while balancing traditional principles for plant control systems and historian data.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with business and IT to ensure alignment with investments, processes, and standards related to Sylvamo’s corporate modern data landscape initiatives.

  • Collaborate with external vendors and technology partners to evaluate and integrate third-party data solutions and services, ensuring they align with the company’s data strategy.

  • Coordinate efforts across manufacturing data owners.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to mill staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

  • Promote a culture of data-driven decision-making across the organization, providing guidance and support to teams in leveraging data for strategic and operational decisions.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in data architecture or related roles, preferably within industrial or manufacturing environments.

  • Proficiency in industrial data protocols (e.g., OPC-UA, MQTT), IoT platforms, MES, ERP systems, and cloud computing technologies.

  • Prior experience executing predictive maintenance/asset performance management solutions in an industrial environment, preferred.

  • Strong understanding of data governance, data modeling, and database management systems.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and execute methodically.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.

  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and advanced analytics platforms.

  • Familiarity with industrial automation systems, SCADA, and PLCs.

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity practices related to industrial data systems.

  • Certification in data architecture or related areas is a plus.
