Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Cardiology related duties: Evaluates physical conditions related to blood flow and pressure in the coronary arteries and heart chambers by utilizing specialized imaging and other diagnostic techniques. A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, and experience. This role will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. An experienced level role requiring basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and requiring vocational or technical education. Works under moderate supervision, works through problems of a routine nature, but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures and communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation.

Job Overview

Under the general supervision, provides technical support and assistance to the physician during Electrophysiology procedures. Performs scrub, hemodynamic monitoring, stimming, and circulating with all Electrophysiology procedures using clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional judgement in accordance with professional and departmental standards and protocols. Provides care, assessment prior, during and post-procedural instruction to patients. Prepares and maintains all pertinent information related to procedures.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Associates degree from an accredited school of Cardiovascular Technology.

  2. Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES).

  3. Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.

  4. One (1) year of relevant experience.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Performs the daily procedures in the electrophysiology laboratory including radio-frequency catheter ablations, pacemaker implants, ICD implants, tilt table tests, direct current cardioversions, and intracardiac ultrasound- Doppler.

  2. Maintains and troubleshoots electrophysiology laboratory equipment to assure operability and safety; calibrates equipment and performs routine preventative maintenance procedures.

  3. Performs emergency therapeutic maneuvers during procedures. Initiates life support techniques in the event of a cardiac and respiratory arrest including CPR, defibrillation, temporary pacemaker insertion and airway management.

  4. Assists the physician in the preparation of the patient; assists during the procedure; and provides all appropriate services to safely and efficiently complete patient procedures.

  5. Provides assistance in evaluation and analysis of pulse generators during pacemaker procedures and pacemaker clinic.

  6. Analyzes and files electrocardiographic data utilizing digital computer analysis systems and paper filing systems. Practices sterile technique preparing for procedure including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping and setup of instrument table.

  7. Responsible for primary and secondary hemostasis during and after procedure. Participates in departmental quality control and quality assurance initiatives and Joint Commission-mandated educational programs.

  8. Performs appropriate billing for services rendered or equipment used as related to electrophysiology.

  9. Assists with the training and orientation within the department.

  10. Assists with ongoing clinical research trials pertinent to the electrophysiology laboratory.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Work within the semi-restricted and restricted environment of the Operating Room and other Perioperative support areas.

  2. Stands under hot surgical lights for prolonged periods of time.

  3. Possibility of muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment, shocks and burns from cautery units and autoclaves. Possibility of cuts from sharp instruments.

  4. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, extreme noise levels, radiation, lasers, drastic fluctuations in ambient temperature, etc.

  5. Wear a protective lead apron for extended periods of time and exposure to radioactivity, harmful anesthesia gases and septic infections.

  6. Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, equipment, power tools, instruments, etc.

  7. Frequent contacts with patients, physicians and nursing staff in Operating Room.

  1. Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.

  2. Attention to detail and unwavering commitment to patient safety.

  3. Knowledge of cardiac procedures, including structural heart procedures, and equipment operation.

  4. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
