Description

The Artificial General Intelligence Data Service (AGI-DS) team is seeking a dedicated, skilled, and innovative Principal Applied Scientist with a robust background in deep learning, to build industry-leading technology with Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal systems.

Key job responsibilities

As a Principal Scientist within the AGI-DS organization, you will be a trusted part of the technical leadership. You will bring a deep understanding of business and industry context to drive science and technology decisions that shape the development of algorithms and models across the organization. By setting the standard for scientific excellence, you will make critical decisions that align with the strategic goals of the company.

A key aspect of your role will be to collaborate closely with talented colleagues to lead the development of advanced approaches and modeling techniques, driving forward the frontier of LLM technology. This includes innovating model-in-the-loop and human-in-the-loop approaches to ensure the collection of high-quality data, safeguarding data privacy and security for LLM training, and more. You will have a direct impact on enhancing customer experiences through state-of-the-art products and services that harness the power of speech and language technology.

You will solicit diverse perspectives from across the organization, challenge assumptions, and remain open to changing your views as you learn more. Your technical artifacts and solutions will be exemplary, serving as references and models of excellence for the broader team. You will tackle intrinsically complex problems, acquiring new expertise as needed, and decomposing challenges into straightforward, elegant solutions.

You will be responsible for defining key research directions, adopting or inventing new machine learning techniques, conducting rigorous experiments, publishing results, and ensuring that research is translated into practice. You will develop long-term strategies, persuade teams to adopt those strategies, propose goals and deliver on them. You will also participate in organizational planning, hiring, mentorship and leadership development. You will be technically fearless and with a passion for building scalable science and engineering solutions. You will serve as a key scientific resource in full-cycle development (conception, design, implementation, testing to documentation, delivery, and maintenance).

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD with specialization in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, machine learning, or computational cognitive science

  • 10+ years of combined academic and research experience.

  • Strong publication record in top-tier journals and conferences.

  • Functional thought leader, sought after for key tech decisions. Can successfully sell ideas to an executive level decision maker.

  • Mentors and trains the scientist community on complex technical issues.

  • Experience developing software in traditional programming languages (C++, Java, etc..).

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong software development skills

  • Experience working effectively with science, data processing, and software engineering teams

  • Proven track record of innovation in creating novel algorithms and advancing the state of the art

  • Entrepreneurial spirit combined with strong architectural and problem solving skills

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
