Sterile Processing Manager

General Summary:

The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager oversees the 24/7 operations of the department, ensuring the availability and proper utilization of medical supplies, instruments, and equipment for patient care. The manager develops and enforces policies and procedures related to sterilization, cleaning, maintenance, storage, and assembly of critical patient care materials.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Policy & Procedure Development: Lead the creation, implementation, and continuous improvement of departmental policies and procedures for sterilization and the handling of medical equipment. Develop and integrate updated decontamination methods as necessary.

  • Strategic Leadership: Set department goals and objectives, establishing an efficient organizational structure. Evaluate service delivery and implement strategies for improving efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Inventory Management: Monitor and manage inventory levels, ensuring par levels are maintained. Collaborate with other departments to introduce new instruments and materials and streamline tracking and distribution processes.

  • Professional Development: Stay current with trends in sterile processing by engaging in professional organizations and continuing education. Lead committees and project teams as required.

  • Staff Management: Oversee recruitment, training, and performance management of SPD staff. Ensure ongoing staff development through education and training initiatives, and manage disciplinary actions when necessary.

  • Compliance & Quality Control: Implement changes as needed to maintain compliance with hospital, departmental, and external standards. Oversee quality control measures, ensuring that data collection and reporting requirements are met.

  • 24/7 Oversight: Provide leadership across all shifts, including direct supervision of shift supervisors and staff.

  • Recordkeeping: Administer and maintain departmental records, ensuring sensitive data is securely managed.

  • Customer Satisfaction: Serve as a role model for customer service, using performance data to uphold and improve standards of patient care and satisfaction.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Required: Certification from HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).

Education:

  • Required: Associate’s degree or two years of occupationally specific education in Surgical Technology, Central Processing, or a closely related field.

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Work Experience:

  • Required: Minimum of five years of experience as a sterile processing technician, with at least three years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to manage and lead departmental staff effectively.

  • Strong communication skills for mediating conflicts and providing clear direction, both verbally and in writing.

  • Capacity to collaborate with employees, vendors, surgeons, and nursing staff to ensure smooth operations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift objects up to 10 pounds frequently and occasionally up to 20 pounds.

  • Regular standing, stooping, bending, and reaching above and below shoulder level.

  • Fine hand manipulation, document proofreading, and computer data entry.

Work Environment & Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure:

This role may involve potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Tasks may require handling body fluids or tissues, with appropriate safety measures in place.
