The Division of Public Safety at CU Boulder is accepting applications for a Community Safety Official! Community Safety Officials (CSOs) are integral members of the Division of Public Safety, serving as non-commissioned security professionals who enhance campus safety through proactive patrols, engagement with the campus community, and collaboration with various campus partners. Specifically, this position provides dedicated safety and security services for the University Libraries to ensure a secure and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
This CSO position will support safety operations at the Libraries by conducting patrols, engaging in community outreach, addressing security concerns, and fostering a safe study environment during extended hours and peak usage periods.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Patrol and Security
Conduct periodic interior and exterior patrols of Libraries, focusing on visibility and identified areas of concern.
Secure and monitor designated Library spaces during scheduled hours.
Perform closing patrols and assist in relocating patrons to Commons areas for extended hours.
Address and document policy violations and safety concerns.
Assist with closing other Library locations as needed.
Monitor and report on building maintenance issues and security incidents via Milestone Camera systems.
Conduct bathroom checks for vandalism and supply needs.
Maintain radio communication with the University of Colorado Police Department (CUPD).
Provide security escorts and assistance with patron needs, including wayfinding and self-checkout systems.
Documentation and Reporting
Submit daily patrol reports detailing activities, incidents, and observations to designated Libraries personnel.
Assist in gathering user data, such as occupancy counts for the Norlin Commons.
Document and communicate any significant incidents, including facility damage or safety emergencies, to Libraries leadership and emergency personnel as required.
Community Engagement
Collaborate with Libraries' security team to develop and implement safety improvements.
Contribute insights and recommendations on security concerns, including addressing known problematic patrons or areas.
Participate in regular reviews with Libraries and DPS leadership to evaluate program success and adjust operations as needed.
What You Should Know
This department operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Must be available to work various shifts when necessary, including overnights, swing shifts, weekends, holidays, etc.
Regular patrol hours:
Fall and Spring Semesters: Sunday-Wednesday, 2:00 PM-Midnight.
Extended Finals Hours: 6:00 PM-2:00 AM (specific dates provided each semester).
Breaks and holidays:
- Coverage during limited hours as determined (e.g., Fall/Spring Break: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM).
Summer hours:
- Established by March 21 annually.
Contingencies:
- In case of unexpected absence or emergencies, coverage will be reassigned per DPS protocols.
In addition to regular pay, shift differentials are available as follows:
Weekend Shift Differential:
20% for hours worked on weekends.
For Fridays, the weekend shift differential applies to all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Second Shift Differential (Monday through Thursday): 7.5%.
For Monday through Thursday, the second shift differential applies to all hours worked when half or more of the scheduled hours fall between 4:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Overtime will be calculated in addition to any applicable shift differential.
This position operates University Vehicles and requires an active Driver's License.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority.
What We Can Offer
The salary for this position is $50,000 annually.
If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program (https://dhr.colorado.gov/state-hr-professionals/compensation/step-pay-program-for-state-of-colorado-employees) implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require
Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
One (1) year of related experience in safety/security operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
What You Will Need
Mediation and conflict resolution skills.
Awareness of cultural sensitivities and mental health resources.
Strong interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.
Physical ability to patrol for long periods, including walking and standing.
