This is a Hybrid role based out of our Hub located in Loveland, Colorado

Job Purpose/Overview

Reporting to the Director, Assay Development, the Senior Scientist will lead a team that is responsible for the design and development of Immunoassays for the use in veterinary diagnostic testing. The Senior Scientist, working closely with Software, Hardware, and Manufacturing staff, will also participate in the technical transfer of those products into the manufacturing process

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and management to lower-level team staff, translating business goals into actionable development plans and assigning tasks and projects to qualified team members.

  • Oversees experimental designs and processes to ensure compliance and high-quality output.

  • Leads the team in developing and validating assays for diagnostic tests; provides guidance around instrumentation and analysis solutions that increase the productivity of assay development teams.

  • Takes ownership of all analysis of data from diagnostic instruments, including developing appropriate data analysis algorithms and methods. Assists and educates assay development teams on data analysis and experimental design.

  • Provides technical leadership within product development core teams.

  • Partners with Software and Hardware Engineering staff on the necessary requirements for the assay. Is a member of the Tech Transfer team ensuring a smooth transition of the assay into the manufacturing area. Provides technical expertise and support during the tech transfer operations.

  • Participates in special projects and assignments as assigned and/ or required.

Education and Experience

  • Preferred Advanced degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related fields.

  • BS/MS with 10 years of experience or PhD with a minimum of 5 years prior assay development industry experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Prior documented Program leadership experience including full cycle management of product or program, leadership of lower-level scientific staff and participation in product transfer to manufacturing.

  • Prior experience in designing and developing Point-of-Care products strongly preferred.

  • Experience in applying analytical skills in experimental design.

  • Strong knowledge of statistical data analysis.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills; ability to effectively “translate” scientific and technical information to others.

Working Conditions

The associate is regularly required to apply manual dexterity, including hand/wrist flexibility, for computer keyboarding. The associate frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The associate is frequently required to hear and speak in order to use the telephone, make presentations and communicate with people in an office environment. The associate is occasionally required to sit and stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

The associate will primarily work in a typical office environment including the use of cubicles, computers and overhead lighting. Temperature extremes will be minimal to nonexistent. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The associate will be required to use a computer, spreadsheets, data base management, email, and the Internet. The associate is frequently required to use a calculator; fax, copy machine, and phone system. The associate must occasionally use media equipment such as an overhead projector, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams.

Laboratory personnel will be trained to work in Biosafety Level 2 laboratory settings and are required to follow all safety protocols and PPE requirements. Lab process equipment may include analyzing and testing tools and the usage of chemicals and reagents. Lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds and process monitoring via visual inspection.

The Target Pay Range for this position is $97,020 - $120,000 annually. At Mars, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.
