The Chinese Flagship Program, housed in Modern Languages, seeks an educator to serve as Program Manager. This 12-month position assists in administering the Chinese Flagship and reports to the PI/Director. The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.

  • Grant Reporting/Management: Produce grant reports and manage data in national Language Flagship Database (SCS) in a timely manner; Maintains the administrative filing in order to accurately document various activities within the Flagship grant; works with PI to prepare grant proposals and reports;

  • Marketing/Communication: Manage both external and internal communication for the CFP, creates and manages social media channels;

  • Outreach and Recruitment: Coordinate with faculty to manage comprehensive outreach initiatives, recruitment events and admission process for prospective students;

  • CFP Programming: Coordinate with faculty to organize academic, cultural and social programs (domestic and overseas) with the goal of building intellectual community and advancing linguistic and cultural advancement among Chinese Flagship students; Supervises and trains student staff to facilitate such co-curricular events; and manages student community living spaces;

  • Advising: Provides programmatic advising and facilitates Mahurin Honors College advising;

  • Supports and facilitates other special projects as assigned by PI/Director.

The Chinese Language Flagship Program at WKU became the 9th such program in the nation in 2009. Sponsored by The Language Flagship, an initiative of the National Security Education Program (NSEP) within the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO), our program seeks to bring students from the beginning level of Chinese proficiency to the Superior level during their undergraduate career. Students enroll in intensive Chinese every semester in addition to their major or minor coursework, with the intent to reach professional proficiency in the language. Students also participate in many funded intensive Chinese language opportunities in the United States and Taiwan during the Summer. All students, upon reaching the Advanced-Mid level of proficiency, may apply for participation in a Capstone Year in Taiwan or California. The Capstone Year consists of either one semester of direct enrollment at National Chengchi University, followed by a 4-6 month professional internship in their field of study in Taiwan or one full year of direct enrollment at Defense Language Institute in Monterey California. Students who complete this requirement and test at the Superior level will receive certification through the NSEP. This position is dependent on continued grant funding, which has been ongoing since 2009.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an academic field from an accredited institution

  • Evidence of strong professional writing skills for grants, scholarships, fellowships, or public relations

  • Experience working with student, staff, and faculty from a variety of cultural backgrounds

  • Valid driver's license and a willingness to work evenings and weekends

Salary: $48,332
