Position classification

Hybrid -- Job duties and expectations allow for onsite and remote work scheduled every week. Employees in this classification are regularly scheduled onsite one (1) to four (4) days per week based on the County needs and as determined by Department Director. Hybrid classified roles can be onsite more than the set minimum based on employee preference.

What Success Looks Like In This Job

The Department has elected to consider a range of experience for this vacancy. A candidate's qualifications will determine the level at which they are hired.

We are seeking a candidate to plan, organize, and monitor professional and technical engineering projects and staff or consultants for the Public Works Department. This includes development and/or review of engineering studies, designs, plans, and other various related design elements associated with public transportation infrastructure and facilities. This position may also participate in the review of engineering submittals associated with public and private improvements within the county for compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

  • Civil Engineer I:Under direction, performs professional engineering work involving the review and design of proposed developments, street design, drainage design, and utility plans, for compliance with the local, state, and federal standards and specifications.

  • Civil Engineer II: Performs professional engineering work involving the review and design of proposed development, roadway, drainage system, and utility plans, for compliance with the local, state, and federal standards and specifications; designs engineering projects.

  • Civil Engineer III: Performs professional and complex engineering work involving all the professional components above, as well as environmental assessment studies for its compliance with local, state, and federal standards and regulations; designs and manages capital improvements projects, prepares engineering plans, specifications, and construction bids.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Review street construction, utility, site grading and drainage plans, in compliance with local, state, and national codes used in current engineering practice.

  • Coordinate with other County staff (right-of-way, traffic operations, drainage, construction inspection, etc.) regarding engineering designs.

  • Advise design engineers about County requirements for street improvements and drainage facilities.

  • Prepare special engineering studies and reports; perform special assignments on engineering problems as necessary; prepare specific studies for other County staff.

  • Process a variety of permits.

  • Respond to public or other inquiries relative to engineering policies and procedures on specific projects.

  • Attend public meetings and other sessions of various committees as needed. Provide technical and professional engineering support services relative to capital improvements and current development.

  • Prepare engineering designs, specifications, costs and quantity estimates of public work projects; identify required easements or permits for roadway, drainage and other public works projects.

  • Exercise professional engineering judgment in accordance with current accepted practice of civil engineering and appropriate laws & codes.

  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications for Success

  • Possess knowledge of and be able to apply principles and practices of civil engineering.

  • Possess knowledge of and be able to apply principles and practices of roadway and drainage system design.

  • Utilize terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in technical civil engineering report preparation.

  • Resolve regulatory, public relations and system design questions.

  • Ensure project compliance with appropriate federal, state, and local rules, laws, and regulations.

  • Perform technical research and solve multi-disciplinary engineering problems. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

More Qualifications for Success

Experience

  • Civil Engineer I: One (1) year of related professional Civil Engineering experience.

  • Civil Engineer II: Minimum of four (4) years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering experience.

  • Civil Engineer III: Minimum of six (6) years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering experience.

    Education and Training: Civil Engineer I-III: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field from an accredited college or university.

License and Certificates:

  • All Levels: Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License.

  • Civil Engineer I:Possession of an Engineering Intern (EI) certification preferred.

  • Civil Engineer II:Possession of an Engineer Intern (EI) certification. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Colorado is preferred.

  • Civil Engineer III:Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Colorado is required.

Background Check:Must pass a criminal (CBI) background check.
