FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a physicist to serve as full-time lecturer and laboratory coordinator. Candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching in both the classroom and the laboratory at the undergraduate level.

The successful candidate will teach introductory physics courses and will be expected to oversee and contribute to the development and running of student laboratory programs, train new instructors on the goals and expectations of the laboratory, stand-in for absent instructors, setup laboratories and collaborate with colleagues to modernize and update laboratories. The lecturer will also be scheduling labs, maintaining inventory of all equipment, materials, and supplies, as well as submitting work orders needed to ensure smooth operation of the laboratory functions of the department. It is expected that 60% of time will be spent on laboratory management and 40% on instruction. The candidate will also represent the department at college wide recruitment events and help share the achievements of the faculty and students in physics and astronomy with both the Lehman community and more broadly.

The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is CUNY's only senior college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions, and further study. The advising and teaching workload will be the equivalent of 24 hours teaching load. Service to the college, university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship and professional development support. The lecturer will also assist faculty members in application for external grants aimed at upgrading undergraduate labs.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has eight full-time faculty members. It is located within the School of Natural and Social Sciences and serves multiple majors, as well as the physics major. The department expects to expand its Astronomy curriculum, including its laboratory curriculum, that the successful candidate will be able to support.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.A Master Degree in Physics or a closely related field is preferred.

COMPENSATION

$83,764
