SUNY Maritime's Writing Center invites interested and qualified professionals to apply for open tutor positions beginning in the Spring of 2024. The Writing Center supplements instruction from any and all courses across degree programs, especially those with reading and composition assignments/requirements. The center's tutors model reading strategies, and writing and revision techniques, teaching and training its student clients rather than evaluating or editing their work, so those clients may improve their literacy and class performance, and ultimately become better and more self-sufficient students. Professional tutors will also lead training seminars for the

Writing Center staff and writing workshops for students both independently and jointly with the Writing Center's Faculty Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Welcome students into the Writing Center and treat them with professionalism, courtesy, and patience
  • Arrive to work on time and attend all scheduled staff meetings and workshops
  • Visit classrooms to advertise Writing Center services when necessary
  • Lead tutor training seminars and writing workshops
  • Routine clerical tasks, including but not limited to answering telephone calls and maintaining records
  • Log time and attendance in SUNY's HR portal and in TracCloud
  • Schedule appointments for students in TracCloud
  • Track tutoring sessions and complete visit reports with summary notes in TracCloud
  • Basic maintenance of all Writing Center spaces
  • Give and receive feedback regarding tutoring sessions

During student visits, tutors will:

  • Read assigned texts and assignment instructions with students, so they follow faculty's directions and meet their requirements
  • Model effective reading strategies and writing and revision techniques
  • When necessary, reference resources regarding paper format, outlines and structure, source citations, mechanics, and grammar



Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • B.A. in English and Composition or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.A., M. Ed., or equivalent in English, Literacy, Composition or related field or equivalent professional experience



Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The anticipated hourly rate for the position is $28.00 - $30.00 per hour. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when position is filled

Special Notes: FLSA non-exempt position that is eligible for overtime monies.
