FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty five colleges within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education. Located in Central Brooklyn, MEC was established in 1970 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community. The Charles Evans Inniss Memorial Library at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks an enthusiastic, creative, and motivated professional for the position of Chief Librarian. The College's Chief Librarian takes a lead role in the integration of the library with teaching, learning, and research activities at the campus. The Chief Librarian understands and has a passion for higher education and the library's role in the same; can articulate a clear vision for a 21st-century library.
Reporting to the College’s Provost, the Chief Librarian is responsible for organizing, directing, and evaluating library services, information resources, policies, planning, outreach, personnel, and budgets, as well as the Library facility and its online presence.
The Chief Librarian will:
Serve as the principal advocate for the Library, its faculty, and staff.
Provide strategic, financial, and managerial leadership for the library, working collaboratively and collegially with faculty and academic leadership at the college and across the university’s library system.
Chair the Library Department and guide the work and professional development of full- time tenure-line library faculty, part-time faculty, professional staff, and civil service staff.
Supervise and facilitate continued integration of new and emerging technologies in Library operations.
Establish a strategic vision that aligns the Library’s mission, goals, and objectives with the College’s Strategic Plan and act as a change agent with a forward-looking vision.
Serve on the College-wide Personnel and Budget Committee, College Council and other college committees. Develop and support strategic relationships with stakeholders on campus and across CUNY.
Provide assessment for all library services: Reference, Access Services, Resource Sharing, Cataloging, Instruction, Automation Systems, Acquisitions & Collection Development, and Archives.
Represent Medgar Evers College Library on the CUNY Council of Chief Librarians and other University Committees.
Perform other related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
For Associate or Full Professor:
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Preferred Qualificans:
Master’s degree in library science (MLS), or Library & Information Science (MLIS), from an (ALA) accredited institution, with a second graduate degree or Ph.D. required.
At least 5 years of demonstrated administrative and management experience in an academic library environment.
Record of scholarly and professional achievement and service appropriate to the rank of associate or full professor.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
A broad understanding if the issues confronting higher education and the role and changing nature of academic librarians.
Experience with assessment and strategic planning.
Energetic and empathetic leadership style and commitment to transparency and clear communication across faculty and staff titles and positions.
Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
The ability to work with others for the good of the college.
Strong understanding of current library technologies and trends, emerging areas of librarianship, and assessing and developing library services.
COMPENSATION
Commensurate with education and experience
$117,805 - $141,858
