Job Summary

The Vail Resorts’ legal team is searching for an experienced labor and employment attorney to join our team as Labor & Employment Counsel. As a driven and collaborative team, the Labor & Employment Legal Team acts as strategic partners to our Human Resources department and provides labor and employment-law advice to all divisions of the organization globally. The Labor & Employment Counsel role requires an agile and flexible problem solver, demonstrated business leader, and team player who can quickly learn new areas of the law and the business. We are looking for a candidate that has at least 4 years of employment law experience, ideally with labor relations experience, and has a demonstrated ability to provide practical solutions to a variety of legal questions. This team member will communicate confidently and clearly with the legal team and internal clients at all levels of the business, handle competing priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Successful candidates will also demonstrate the ability to effectively adapt to evolving circumstances and thrive working both independently and collaboratively.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide advice, counsel and support to the Labor & Employment Legal Team, Human Resources (HR), Internal Investigations, Compliance, and Operations on legal matters, including, but not limited to, union campaigns, collective bargaining, accommodations, disciplinary matters, compensation, leaves of absences, wage and hour, EEO requirements, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, social media, privacy, hiring and separations, and policies and procedures in order to reduce legal risk to the company

  • Oversee federal and state employment-related agency complaints and investigations

  • Assist in managing union-related programs, including campaigns, elections, collective bargaining negotiations, management training, contract/agreement oversight, grievances/ULPs, and other strategic initiatives

  • Monitor state and federal employment legislation and governmental agency enforcement priorities and advise of developments that may or will impact the organization

  • Consult with the investigations team in connection with internal investigations involving employees

  • Prepare and present labor and employment-related trainings to HR and business leaders, including regular alignment with business and HR senior leadership teams

  • Effectively and efficiently supervise and/or partner with internal and outside counsel in labor and employment-related claims, litigation, grievances, arbitration, and regulatory proceedings

  • Adhere to, support, and actively promote the Mission, Values, standards and goals of Vail Resorts, the legal department, and the L&E Team

  • Other duties as necessary and assigned, including willingness to travel

Job Qualifications

  • JD from accredited law school and active state bar license required

  • Minimum 4 years’ legal experience, specifically focused on a combination of employment and traditional labor relations law, with significant time dedicated to advice and counseling versus litigation

  • Demonstrated understanding of federal and state employment laws, regulations, and agencies, including Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FLSA, FMLA, EEOC, and state agencies

  • Demonstrated experience with labor relations, including organizing, campaigns, elections, at-the-table bargaining, compliance, oversight, investigations, and NLRA/NLRB regulations and procedures

  • Creative problem solver with strong project management, organizational, and time management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work calmly under high pressure conditions, meet deadlines, successfully multi-task, and effectively handle different situations with flexibility, patience, positivity, and tact

  • High integrity and capable of building trust and credibility quickly

  • Standout colleague with the proven ability to develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with diverse groups of individuals

  • Impeccable interpersonal communication and customer service orientation

  • Ability to succeed working both independently and as part of a collaborative team

  • Proven ability to drive complex projects to completion with a diverse group of business partners, and to lead collaborative group projects with minimal oversight and guidance

Preferred

  • Experience working with major corporations, either as in-house or outside counsel, particularly in the travel and entertainment industry

  • Experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements, litigating bargaining agreement disputes, and overseeing enforcement/contracts management of CBAs

  • Expertise in California and/or Colorado wage & hour law

  • Experience litigating employment-related class and/or collective actions

The expected Total Compensation for this role is $111,900 - $151,320 + annual bonus. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.

Vail Resorts offers a ‘Hybrid’ work environment for Broomfield-based roles where employees must live within 50 miles of the Broomfield office and work on-site Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and have flexibility to work off-site on Mondays and Fridays.
