This position is a Vehicle Equipment Repair Technician II in the Shallotte Equipment Shop. This is skilled mechanic work. Employees perform a range of progressive tasks involving services and repair of mechanic work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. The applicant must be able to perform skilled mechanic work on various systems including: prevent maintenance, tire, tubes, wheels and rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems, fuel system and hydraulic system.

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components
Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy duty truck and heavy equipment
Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring
Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses
Knowledge of diagnostic software, tools and equipment for trucks and heavy equipment
Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Note: Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications
May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
