Job Summary
The Bursar is directly responsible for the management and operational control of all the functions/activities of the student accounts receivables, cash management, cashiering operations, accounts receivable, and 1098T reporting including implementing appropriate internal controls and technological initiatives. This position works both independently and as an integral part of a team to ensure compliance with the College, state, federal regulations, and standard accounting procedures. The Bursar will collaborate with colleagues across multiple departments and programs, to ensure the efficiency and integrity of the student aid, billing, and collection processes at the College.
Essential Functions:
Build, record, and prepare student statements and support students and parents in navigating the payment process. Manage student AR collection and student holds in alignment with College policies. Monitor and analyze receivables monthly.
Independently study new laws, procedures, and recommendations developed by outside agencies such as IRS and NACUBO . Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Effectively communicate with staff, supervisor, and peers within the Controller’s Office and external colleagues. Provide a high level of customer service to other departments, staff, faculty, students, and parents.
Manage relationships with third party agencies, including collectors and servicers related to tuition/loan billing and payments.
Responsible for IRS Form 1098-T preparation and compliance.
Record and monitor various miscellaneous receivable activities including Children’s Center, Summer Programs, Events, Dining, and Athletics.
Education/Skills Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required.
Strong supervisory skills. Must be highly organized and detail-oriented. Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills. Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Minimum of 5 years of experience in a business office environment and demonstrated understanding of, and experience with receivables management. Experience in the management of student financial services preferred. Experience with Workday Student or Finance is highly desirable.
Standard Work Days and Hours
This is a full-time position working 40 hours/52 weeks, (1.00 FTE ) with occasional evening or weekends as required. Administrative hours are 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. As an exempt level position, the time commitment needed to complete the essential duties of the position is expected.
The Bursar is an on-site role, and candidates must be able to work in person on Bowdoin College Campus in Brunswick, Maine.
COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is expected to be: $81,800 – $88,800.
