Job Summary

Bowdoin College is located in Brunswick Maine with a student population of almost 2000. We make everything from scratch and are consistently rated in the top 10 for college dining! We have our own butcher shop, bakeshop, and organic garden that all supply food to our 2 dining halls and 3 retail locations.

Under supervision of the Culinary Manager, the Purchasing Coordinator ensures quality, quantity, and cost goals are met through effective purchasing. Other responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining storage areas and maintains appropriate inventory levels.

  • Working with the Sourcing and CBORD Manager to develop and maintain purchasing standards and obtain products through the warehouse.

  • Having an active role in dining hall operations and offering guidance and support to production and service staff.

  • Supporting food sustainability initiatives including local and plant-forward purchasing, food waste reduction, recycling, and composting in support of department goals and initiatives.

  • The starting pay range for this position will be $25.80/hour. Compensation based on your skills and experience.

    Education/Skills Requirements

  • Two-year Culinary Arts degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience leading to comparable culinary knowledge and abilities is required.

  • Licenses or Certifications: Serve Safe Certification and Food Allergy training certificate required.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the eligibility requirements of the College’s current Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.

    Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

  • 1-3 years of culinary and/or kitchen supervisory experience in a quality institutional, college, restaurant or catering establishment required.

  • Must have high volume food purchasing experience, preferably using food management software, and demonstrated experience and understanding of quality cooking techniques.

  • Experience and familiarity with food sustainability issues and initiatives and the ability to translate programs into action.

Preferred:

  • 4-7 years of culinary and/or kitchen supervisory experience in a quality institutional, college, restaurant or catering establishment.

  • Experience with CBORD procurement software.

    Standard Work Days and Hours

  • Typically work Sunday – Thursday, 6:00 am – 2:00 pm, with Friday and Saturday off.

  • All staff are required to adjust schedules to cover major College event weekends like Commencement, Reunions, Family and Homecoming weekends.

  • Dining staff are considered essential personnel and therefore required to work during weather emergencies and holidays when meal service is required.
