Position Summary: A Charter School Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the operational aspects of a charter school or network of charter schools. The COO ensures that the organization operates efficiently, complies with regulations, and supports its academic mission. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the operational leadership and strategic oversight of the charter school's business functions. This role ensures operational excellence, compliance with applicable regulations, and the delivery of support services to enable high-quality education for all students. The COO manages various departments, including finance, human resources, facilities, technology, and compliance.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
Collaborate with the Head of School and Operations Team to develop and implement the school's strategic vision and goals.
Provide operational insights to support decision-making and long-term planning.
Supervise the members of the Operations Team.
Operations Management:
Oversee day-to-day operations, including facilities management, transportation, and IT.
R esponsible for fiscal oversight of the school food services program, including purchasing, filing appropriate federal and state reports, and submitting related claims for payment.
Ensure policies and procedures are in place for efficient and compliant operations.
Develop systems to monitor and improve operational performance.
Assists in overseeing enrollment data, obtaining proper district of residence forms and serves as a liaison for preparation of State Aid billings to districts.
Oversee all aspects of the grants management and implementation process, from identifying and applying for funding opportunities to ensuring compliance with grant requirements and reporting obligations.
Financial Oversight:
Manage budgeting, financial planning, and fiscal compliance.
Monitor financial performance and implement cost-saving strategies as needed.
Monitors and maintains compliance with regulations for the school's retirement plan and acts as the plan administrator in all authorizations of the school's retirement plan, loan applications, and hardship distributions.
Serve as the Scribe for the Finance Committee and 403(b) Sub-Committee.
Responsible for Accounts Receivable, cash handling, and financial institution deposits
Responsible for the collection of all revenues and the investment of district funds in accordance with Board policy and state statute.
Human Resources:
Collaborate closely with the Director of HR to support and drive key initiatives.
Support HR functions, including payroll and compliance, while serving as the secondary administrator for payroll.
Promote a positive organizational culture that aligns with the school's mission and values.
Compliance and Risk Management:
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including education laws and charter-specific requirements.
Manage contracts, procurement, and vendor relationships.
Oversee risk management, including insurance, legal issues, and emergency preparedness.
Facilities and Technology:
Supervise facilities planning, maintenance, and improvements to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.
Assist in the implementation and management of technology infrastructure to support academic and administrative needs.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Serve as a liaison between the school's operations team and external stakeholders, such as parents, community partners, and regulatory agencies.
Foster strong relationships with the Board of Directors and provide operational updates.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Education, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of Five years proven experience in a senior operational or management role, in education, nonprofit, or public sector organization.
Experience in charter schools or K-12 education systems is highly desirable.
