Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center has an opening for a School Building Leader (SBL) at our Special Education Early Childhood Program located in Lockport.

The SBL is responsible for the overall operation of their Early Childhood Program site and to oversee multi-disciplinary teams regarding school structure and educational team effectiveness. The SBL, in collaboration with the Assistant Director, will coordinate and plan all phases of instructional leadership for the school while implementing an effective special education program that supports ECP and educational philosophies and initiatives. The SBL will ensure that New York State guidelines and regulations are being implemented.

Essential Functions:

  • Foster and oversee building-wide procedures and classroom structures at individual sites; maintain high quality standards and educational accountability

  • Orient, mentor and evaluate performance of special education teachers and paraprofessionals.

  • Monitor paperwork including annual reviews, quarterlies, amendments, progress monitoring, and curriculum progress reporting.

  • Cultivate teachers' capacity to improve instruction based on analysis of assessment data; progress monitoring tool.

  • Cultivate paraprofessionals capacity to support best practices and individualized student support.

  • Develop and evaluate culturally responsive practice that is equitable and inclusive among staff.

  • Ensure educational programming represents Developmentally Appropriate Practices as defined by NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children); New York State Early Learning Guidelines and New York Next Generation State Standards.

  • Oversee curriculum in conjunction with the Curriculum/Educational Coordinator

  • Oversee daily functioning of classroom such as staffing, interviews, classroom coverage, team/parent meetings, crisis management and student attendance.

  • Collaborate with ECP Directors, School Building Leaders, and Therapy Supervisors contributing to continuous program and school improvement discussions

  • Collaborate with intake coordinator/ECP Directors/ School Building Leaders and site Social Workers on new referrals, intake process/ student placement and parent tours.

  • Ensure educational programming adheres to New York State Education Departments (NYSED) and the Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS; preschool classrooms) regulations and guidelines.

  • Guides staff in use of data to drive quality and purposeful programming

  • Establish and participate in a site shared Decision-Making Team and Safety Committee

  • Knowledge of Developmentally Appropriate Practices & Universal Supports

  • Knowledge of New York State Early Learning Guidelines

  • Knowledge of New York State Next Generation Learning Standards

  • Thorough knowledge of the special education process

  • A comprehensive understanding of teaching and learning

    Minimum Degree Required:Master's Degree in education or related Field

    Minimum Experience Required:5 years as a Special Education Teacher

    Required License/ Registration/ Certification:New York State Certification: School Building Leader, School District Leader, or School Administrator/Supervisor

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical actions may include, but are not limited to; bending, kneeling, standing, squatting, reaching, printing, crawling, and running.

  • Vision, speech, tactical and hearing senses adequate to perform job requirements.

  • Frequent sitting/ standing and when appropriate, floor sitting with pediatric patients.
