Position Overview 

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vice President of Legal Operations to oversee and manage all legal aspects of our organization. The ideal candidate will be a licensed construction attorney with extensive experience in contract management, risk management, employment law, and other legal areas relevant to our industry. The VP of Legal Operations will play a critical role in ensuring that all business policies and activities are managed correctly and in compliance with current laws and regulations. This individual will provide strategic guidance on legal issues, manage compliance and risk mitigation efforts, review contracts, and handle other legal duties to protect the organization's interests. Additionally, the VP of Legal Operations will utilize their broad range of legal expertise and current knowledge to advise leadership on any regulatory changes or actions that may impact the business. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Oversee the strategic direction of the legal department and operational team. 

  • Set the legal department’s strategy and roadmap, aligning it with company business objectives and growth plans. 

  • Oversee the drafting, negotiation, and management of all contracts entered into by the organization. Ensure that contracts are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations and accurately reflect the organization's interests. 

  • Identify potential legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate them. Implement policies and procedures to minimize legal exposure and protect the organization from liability. 

  • Provide guidance on employment law matters, including hiring practices, employee relations, discrimination, harassment, and termination. Ensure compliance with all relevant employment laws and regulations. 

  • Develop and maintain compliance programs to ensure adherence to relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards. Conduct regular audits and assessments to monitor compliance efforts and identify areas for improvement. 

  • Advise senior leadership on legal matters affecting the organization's operations, including regulatory changes, litigation risks, and business transactions. Provide strategic guidance to support decision-making processes. 

  • Assist or represent the organization in negotiations with business partners, vendors, and other third parties. Advocate for the organization's interests while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. 

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure legal compliance and enhance operational efficiency. Review and update existing policies as necessary to reflect changes in laws or regulations. 

  • Provide training and education to employees on legal matters relevant to their roles. Promote a culture of compliance and ethical conduct throughout the organization. 

  • Collaborate with external legal counsel to manage litigation and disputes involving the organization. Develop strategies to minimize legal expenses and achieve favorable outcomes. 

  • Stay abreast of developments in the legal and regulatory landscape that may impact the organization. Proactively identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications 

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school. 

  • Licensed attorney with active membership in good standing with the state bar association. 

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience practicing law, with a focus on construction law preferred. 

  • Proven track record of leadership and management in a legal or compliance role. 

  • Strong understanding of contract law, risk management principles, and employment law regulations. 

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively advise senior leadership and collaborate with cross-functional teams. 

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate legal issues and develop proactive solutions. 

  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. 

Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
