Posting Summary
Oversee laboratory operations of the newly formed UVM Soil Health Research and Extension Center ( SHREC ), which provides soil health laboratory analyses for farmers, researchers, extension, and other agricultural professionals. Develop and adapt analytical procedures, provide cost estimates, perform data compilation and analysis. Manage development and modification of interpretative reports. Educate farmers and train researchers, students and other technicians. Maintain lab instruments including troubleshooting problems, routine calibration, and demonstrate usage for classes. Ability to develop new protocols as new tests are added to the lab offerings. Oversee safety protocol of lab. Perform sample tracking from receipt through testing result reporting. Develop grant proposals to maintain and enhance lab operations.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor’s degree in soil science, environmental sciences, or related field and three years of lab experience required. Prior field or lab research experience involving soil biology or soil ecology. Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols required. Effective interpersonal and communication skills required to work with researchers, farmers and the general public.
Desirable Qualifications
Advanced degree in soils or environmental sciences desirable with experience in soil health-focused research. Experience with database programming and applications desirable.
Anticipated Pay Range $60,000 to $70,000
Other Information
Special Conditions Bargaining unit position, External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period, Contingent on continued funding, A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees, This position is ineligible for telework due to the essential functions, Background Check required for this position
