Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Bushland, TX. In this position, you will serve as the focal point for duties related to the operation and maintenance functions for the research facility, which include laboratory/office structures, a grain elevator, a chemical storage facility, a maintenance facility, four housing units, and two bridges. Responsibilities Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing systems. Performs regular inspection and service to ensure lab water systems remain sterile and pure. Maintains, repairs, or replaces defective equipment and components in power plants and heating systems. Removes, cleans, and reinstalls or replaces joints and fixtures, e.g. traps, faucets, and unions. Physical Effort The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. This requires the incumbent to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Close eye-hand coordination is required. The incumbent frequently lifts and carries up to 75 pounds; the incumbent may occasionally lift or move more than 75 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions The work is performed both inside and outside. The incumbent is sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 9 meters (30 feet) or more; and in close quarters such as manholes, attics, or in grain bins. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, bums, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. The incumbent is required to wear approp1iate protective clothing and equipment and conform to all OSHA safe working regulations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement.
