Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Geological Engineering. The anticipated starting date is January 2, 2025. The department (https://www.mtech.edu/geological-engineering/index.html) is one of the founding programs in what was once the Montana School of Mines in Butte, Montana, a city of about 35.000 people with great historical and geological significance in the scenic Rocky Mountains of southwestern Montana. The department houses an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree program in geological engineering, with five pre-designed undergraduate options: geophysics, geotechnical, hydrogeology, mining, and petroleum. The department also offers master’s degrees in Geological Engineering and in Geosciences (with options in engineering geology, geology, geophysics, and hydrogeology), and a doctoral degree in Earth Sciences and Engineering. We also house Montana Tech’s physics program that serves the entire campus through undergraduate physics instruction and the UAS (drone) certificate program, and provide all of the geology service courses offered on campus. We are seeking a dynamic, student-oriented individual with a desire to engage undergraduate and graduate students in hands-on learning and research. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the geological engineering program by teaching a mix of general undergraduate classes and graduate classes in the candidate’s areas of expertise. Incorporation of fieldwork into courses will be encouraged and expected. The surrounding region provides outstanding field sites for instructional and research activities. The ideal candidate would have a doctoral degree in geological engineering, geology, or a closely related field, with expertise in topics relevant to the undergraduate curriculum. The individual would have a commitment to excellent teaching at all levels, along with the ability to build an internationally-recognized externally-funded research program, and providing significant service to the department, college, and university. Available within the department are state-of-the-art equipment and software for instruction and research spanning the broad fields of geology and geological engineering, including hydrogeology and geophysics, and a good fleet of research UAVs. Of particular note are a 330,000 lb triaxial load frame, an earthquake shake table, and the Underground Mining Education Center (UMEC) facility, and many state-of-the-art analysis instruments on campus. Many opportunities exist for developing research programs in collaboration with other members of the department and related departments on campus, such as Mining, Metallurgical, Civil, Environmental, and Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry and Geochemistry, and the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology.
