Dorchester County Government Payroll Specialist in Cambridge, Maryland

PAYROLL SPECIALIST Finance Department Full-time with Benefits Non-Exempt

Job Summary and Essential Functions The purpose of this job is to be responsible for processing County biweekly payroll while ensuring accuracy of all related payroll items such as hours, earnings, deductions, and taxes. This position requires the ability to establish priorities, handle sensitive or confidential situations and provide a high level of customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

Review Departmental timesheets ensuring complete payroll information before processing payroll data. Enter any required manual entries for accurate and complete Departmental payroll. Calculate various payroll adjustments as necessary for accurate and complete Departmental payroll. Provides related payroll reports to leadership and external stakeholders while maintaining confidentiality and abiding by all federal, state, and local laws and statutes. Coordinate with any third party payroll providers in processing payroll. Coordinate and assist with all third party payroll vendor payments ensuring timely employee and employer responsibilities satisfied. All other duties as assigned.

Education and Qualifications High school diploma or GED required Associates degree or Vocational or Technical training (Payroll) and/or degree preferred Three to five years of work related experience Excellent communication and people skills Working knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures and ability to use in varied situations Working knowledge of State laws and regulations of Workers Compensation Working knowledge of payroll platforms Ability to answer routine and factual questions from internal and external customers and resolve problems Ability to work the confidential and sensitive information Maintain HIPPA Certification

Physical requirements and working environment Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, copier, telephone, and communications equipment. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for light work. Capable of ascending stairs and pedestrian areas as needed. Clear vision and hearing, including the ability to communicate effectively in various environments. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others. When position requires vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by Dorchesters safe driving policy.
