Rotating Equipment Reliability Engineer

Job Summary

The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery, located in Carson/Wilmington CA, is seeking a Rotating Equipment Reliability Engineer to maintain and improve operational availability, optimize equipment life cycle cost, and achieve best in class reliability. This position supports operating area teams on issues related to rotating equipment and collaborates with other departments daily. The Rotating Equipment Reliability Engineer will support troubleshooting machinery issues, develop project requests, implement new solutions, and lead reliability programs. The schedule for the position is 4 days - 10 hours days - Monday-Thursday - core hour 7 AM - 3:30 PM, after hours calls that can be handled over the phone can occur once a month and support of TAR once every three years.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintenance and Area Team Support

  • Serve as a technical resource to the Maintenance Machinery Advisors, Foreman, and Technicians, as well as Operations to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair rotating equipment.

  • Develop and provide training on rotating equipment and support systems to Maintenance and Operations personnel.

  • Lead site reliability programs and initiatives including Incident Investigations (using RCFA methods), Lost Opportunity Tracking, Pump Seal Reliability Program, PM Optimization, and Area Team Threats Neutralization Program to identify opportunities for improvement and drive solutions.

  • Submit and approve equipment Preventative Maintenance (PM) plans to ensure compliance with Refinery Standard Practices and reliability initiatives.

  • Perform equipment condition assessments to determine fitness for service and to develop equipment care and repair plans. Review equipment repair reports from outside shops, provides input on inspection requirements and approves repair plans ensuring compliance with Marathon specifications.

  • Identify critical equipment spare part requirements and ensures warehouse storage is aligned with the plan.

  • Identify and maintain a list of obsolete equipment and manages the replacement/upgrade plan.

  • Interface with MPC Rotating Equipment Advisory Group to share lessons learned and best practices. Engages management to champion specification changes to improve equipment reliability and department efficiency.

Projects and TAR Support

  • Develop Project Request Forms (PRFs) for reliability improvements and champions those through completion.

  • Define expectations and project deliverables related to Mechanical Integrity and reliability requirements, as well as site preferred technologies and methodologies.

  • Review project documentation, P&ID’s, and data sheets to ensure accuracy.

  • Provide technical support to Major Maintenance (MM) and Turnaround (TAR) execution team, assisting with equipment inspection, QA/QC, and FCO process.

  • Develop, submit, and ensure MM/TAR scope is well justified, documented correctly, and meets maintenance specifications and industry best practices.

Health, Safety, Environmental and Mechanical Integrity Stewardship

  • Participate in safety walks and field audits on a regular basis.

  • Serve as a technical resource to the Process Safety Department during Area Team HAZOP reviews.

  • Lead or support incident investigations to determine root cause and identify corrective actions.

  • Support MOC process and ensures technical documentation is maintained per company policy.

  • Champion Mechanical Integrity program and the Major Equipment Deficiency process with key stakeholders.

Personal Development

  • Maintain a personal development plan and attends training to foster professional development to support career goals.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED and 7 years of experience OR Bachelor’s degree in engineering and l east 3 years of post degree engineering experience. Experience should be in maintenance, machinery or engineering in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Must have experience interpreting and applying industrial and company standards.

  • Must have strong understanding of Management of Change requirements and process.

  • Able to understand mechanical systems and cross-section drawings to troubleshoot field equipment.

  • Able to successfully communicate complex system information across various audiences, from hourly personnel to Refinery management.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is less than 5 %.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of all applicable industry standards for rotating equipment is preferred.

  • Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of rotating equipment such as pumps, compressors, turbines, and gas engines is preferred.

  • Experience with machinery control systems such as anti-surge protection systems, turbine governors and overspeed protection, and performance control software is preferred.

  • Experience in the use of machinery condition monitoring tools such as Bently Nevada System 1, SKF, CSI, Prognost, and Windrock is preferred.

  • Experience in the installation of large machinery equipment, including foundation design, grouting, pipe strain, and alignment is preferred.

  • Working knowledge and application experience of RCM principles, RCFA and FMEA methodology and application is preferred.

  • Proficient in troubleshooting field rotating equipment and machinery to ensure safe and reliable operations is preferred.

  • Experience utilizing CMMS software. SAP experience is preferred.
