Position Summary
Organize, implement, and direct the maintenance of the Corps buildings, grounds and vehicles, and perform pick-ups and deliveries as necessary. Keep facility and grounds clean and in good order.
Essential Functions
Adhere to and, if necessary, reorganize daily custodian schedule for Corps building internally and externally; includes but not limited to: dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, cleaning windows, vacuuming, emptying trash, and maintaining all restrooms
Keep all janitorial/maintenance closets and supply areas neat and clean
Utilize community-service workers assigned to the Corps to assist with janitorial/program needs
Adhere to and, if necessary, reorganize daily program set-up schedules
Work cooperatively with staff members to address their custodian/maintenance/driving needs Under officer supervision, set up and follow periodic-check system to service, for example, emergency lights, water heater, fire alarms, building alarms, fire-protection systems, kitchen mechanical equipment, and vehicles
Identify and propose maintenance projects necessary for property upkeep; handle small projects, such as light painting, minor plumbing issues, and miscellaneous repairs, in-house as time and skills permit, and complete projects in a competent, timely manner as directed by Corps Officers
Secure all outside doors and windows daily; turn off appropriate lights upon exiting premises
Raise and lower both American and Salvation Army flags, as appropriate, during weekdays
Keep sidewalks, entryways, and all landscaped areas clean and trash-free; report all landscape problems or needs to Corps Officers
Maintain supply and equipment inventory; advise Corps Officers on necessary purchases
Assist with food pantry as directed by Corps Officers, including but not limited to: filling shelves, inventorying food, counting donations, organizing shelves, and performing custodial duties
Pick up daily donations in accordance with established, approved store and Salvation Army polices; use of a TSA vehicle will be limited to donation pickup, maintenance jobs, and pick up of goods
Use protective equipment when using cleaning supplies or spraying chemicals; follow appropriate safety policies and procedures Attend staff meetings as required
Keep complete, up-to-date driving and maintenance records for all vehicles
Must maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License
Must have or obtain a Class B license within the first 90 days of employment.
Must successfully complete Decision Driving Safety Test before driving for The Salvation Army and annually recertify as required
Must meet certification by and participation in The Salvation Army's Fleet Safety Program
(Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy dictates that an employee may not obtain more than two [2] moving violations or accidents within any 12-month period; see The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Policy)
Working Conditions
Ability to walk, stand, bend squat climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up to 50lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as file cabinet drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to follow written and verbal directions while maintaining close communication with
Corps Officers; willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends
Working knowledge of custodial, gardening, and light-maintenance equipment
Demonstrated sense of cleanliness, tidiness and neatness
High degree of initiative; willingness to help people, and desire be an effective team member
Ability to work with children and vulnerable adults while maintaining appropriate boundaries
Ability to communicate effectively and interact with co-workers, management, leadership, and the public in a positive and productive manner
Ability to present oneself in a professional manner
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Minimum high school graduate or equivalent
Bilingual English/Spanish helpful
