Assistant/Associate General Counsel

 

The well-established Southern Utah University Office of Legal Affairs is looking for an Assistant/Associate General Counsel (AGC) serves as a legal officer to provide advice on critical strategic, legal, and policy issues, including academic and corporate governance, employment, student affairs, academic affairs, immigration issues, contracts, risk management, compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, copyright and other intellectual property matters, information technology, SUU policies, athletics, Shakespeare Festival, and aviation. This role involves close coordination with the State Attorney General's Office regarding risk management and litigation matters.

 

The AGC will assist in providing legal services for the Office of Legal Affairs and will report directly to the University General Counsel. The AGC will strategically collaborate with SUU Leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Review, research, interpret, and prepare written and oral advice.

 

Provide advice on compliance with legal and regulatory obligations to committees, councils, and other administrators and campus committees.

Create and provide educational resources for clients.

Review contracts, leases, and other legal documents; research legal issues and recommend revisions.

Prepare and refine office work product and processes.

Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

 

JD from an ABA-accredited law school.

Licensed to practice in Utah, or if licensed in another state, must be able to obtain admission to practice in Utah within one year of hire, and must be a member in good standing with the Utah State Bar.

Expert ability to perform legal research, and write precise legal memorandums and case summaries.

Demonstrated ability to efficiently and effectively draft reports and apply sophisticated logical reasoning, including analyzing facts, spotting issues, applying facts to policy, and distilling the foregoing into a concise but thorough report.

Demonstrated ability to use judgment and manage confidential information.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks, adhere to deadlines, and manage workload in a fast-moving environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Experience in higher education law, preferred.
