As a Geotechnical Department Manager , you will provide project management and oversight of assigned projects for the Geotechnical and Construction Materials Testing service lines.

Job Responsibilities

• Travel to various job sites in a company provided vehicle

• Geotechnical business development, networking and marketing

• Provide guidance and oversight for collection of field data

• Mentor other staff professionals, field/lab technicians and interns

• Staff field work

• Provide on-site project management to complete field testing

• Review, update and approve invoices weekly for on-going projects

• Develop and manage projects with clients

• Create and update project proposals and reports

• Document accurate and detailed daily field activity and/or diagrams and report the findings to the clients and supervisors

• Complete proof roll observations and undercuts

• Classify soils per ASTM standards

• Communicate verbally and electronically with various field personnel and colleagues

• Maintain daily communication with technicians, contractors and other project managers

• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills

• Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record

• BS in Civil Engineering from an accredited university

• Professional Engineering license (PE) Virginia, Maryland and DC, or can get reciprocity for those states

• 5+ years of Geotechnical/CMT full-time work experience

• 2+ years of project management and oversight/mentorship of other staff professionals/technicians

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to use technology

• Ability to read and interpret construction documents

• Ability to accurately complete field-testing paperwork

• Strong computer and math skills

• Knowledge of construction materials testing methods, ASTM standards, and soil classifications

• Knowledge of geotechnical engineering calculations (soil settlement, bearing pressure, and slope stability)

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, detailed reports, short correspondence and memos

• Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

• Days and hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday

• Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments

• Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing, sitting and potentially repetitive motions

• Typically, this position involves 80% office work, 20% field work, depending on the week/work

• Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)

• Ability to lift/move up to 50lbs.

• You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day within the Mid-Atlantic region

• Some weekend, overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required
