American Institutes for Research Research Associate Intern - Education Statistics (Master's Students) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Overview

Join AIR as a Research Associate Intern with ourEducation Statistics (https://www.air.org/our-work/education) team during our 2024 Virtual Summer Internship Program.AIR’s 2024 Virtual Summer Internship Program is designed to identify, attract, and hire the best collegiate talent that will drive creativity and innovation while enabling the organization to create a diverse and skilled talent pool. Typically spanning 10 – 12 weeks, AIR’s paid summer program provides Interns with various learning and networking opportunities that enhance their skillset and build lasting professional connections.

Our Education Statistics program focuses on the development, collection, analysis, and communication of international, national, and state statistics. Our team consists of experts with the mission to provide statistical evidence that is meaningful, timely, accurate, and trustworthy.

This position will support a variety of sample survey studies, administrative studies, and/or longitudinal studies. Examples of studies include National Household Education Study, National Training, Education, and Workforce Survey, School Survey on Crime and Safety Survey, National Teacher and Principal Survey, High School Longitudinal Study, Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Middle Grades Longitudinal Study, the Public Libraries Survey, and the National Museum Survey. Candidates hired for the position may work remotely within the United States (U.S.) or from one of ourU.S. office locations. (https://www.air.org/locations#headquarters) This does not include U.S. territories.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for the position include:

  • Provide support for a variety of sample survey studies, administrative studies, and/or longitudinal studies. Examples of studies include National Household Education Study, National Training, Education, and Workforce Survey, School Survey on Crime and Safety Survey, National Teacher and Principal Survey, High School Longitudinal Study, Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Middle Grades Longitudinal Study, the Public Libraries Survey, and the National Museum Survey.

  • Provide support to the operations of data collection, including activities related to interviewer training, user experience testing, monitoring field operations, and creating indicators of data collection.

  • Conduct data analysis and reporting of survey results and methodological survey research.

  • Support the drafting and review of National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) products such as data documentation, Data Points, and blogs.

  • Conduct data quality assurance checks and basic statistical analyses to produce summary statistics.

  • Support qualitative research projects with schools, teachers, parents, and districts.

  • Conduct literature reviews to help support potential survey design questions.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Must be a student (for the duration of the internship) enrolled in a Master’s degree in such fields as economics, psychology, sociology, statistics, computer science, public policy, survey methodology, or other social science related fields.

  • Methodological education and/or expertise in social science research practices

  • Basic understanding of/exposure to basic descriptive and inferential statistics

Skills:

  • Ability to use statistical software programs such as R, SPSS, or Stata to analyze data – a plus but not required

  • Strong writing skills

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work efficiently in a virtual work environment

  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a team with individuals from diverse backgrounds and at all levels

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to rigorous quality control

  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite or the equivalent (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software)

This position offers $25.00 per hour. Salary offers are made based on internal equity within the organization and external equity with competitive markets. Please note this is the salary for candidates that are based in the United States.
