Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide animal husbandry to the Laboratory Animal Resources ( LAR ).

  • Work requires knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, tests, techniques and terminology.

  • Conducting experiments, collecting and summarizing data, providing proper laboratory/study subject care, and perform necessary administrative duties.

  • This position follows all pertinent policies, SOPs, guidelines, and instructions of the LAR leadership (Director, Manager and Attending Veterinarian).

  • Provides routine care for laboratory animals and Provides routine observations of animals on research protocols.

  • Tasks include cleaning cages, feeding, assuring water delivery and/or changing bottles, breeding, weaning, transferring from cage to cage, weighing, restraining, maintenance of cage and room level records, sanitizing cages, bottles, racks, rooms, service areas, and hallways and administering of prescribed treatments (such as analgesics or ointments), receipt of incoming animals, completion of health records, sedation and anesthesia.

  • Provision of general assistance to client researchers. Assurance of compliance with Standard Operating Procedures for applicable tasks.

  • Works closely with LAR leadership in supporting animal research.

  • Coordinates equipment and supplies to be used in each research room.

  • Maintains inventory control for the research events; places orders; uses any available system to document various tasks.

  • Makes observations of animals on research protocols and equipment used to maintain sanitation and safety.

  • Alerts LAR leadership of inventory of equipment, supplies, and unexpected events and outcomes.

  • Monitors and collects daily/weekly/monthly environmental parameters, animal numbers, health information, and research data, as required by research protocol and facility management protocols.

  • Maintains appropriate documentation of those results and makes recommendations to LAR leadership based on those results.

  • Knowledge handling and restraining species housed at LAR .

  • Provide research support for specific protocols as it pertains to animal experiments.

  • Assist with revision and edition of SOPs, work safely, and report any atypical events.

  • Conducts tests or experiments according to SOP , including but not limited to euthanasia, breeding maintenance, weaning, injections, and sentinel samples for shipment, including physical processing of all sample specimens, packaging of specimens, and test requisition.

  • Conduct routine tests and procedures for frog husbandry, including water quality testing. Identifies equipment failures that will affect the outcome of research experiments; in some cases, may modify or refine the process to meet research goals.

  • Mix and monitor chemicals as necessary for room and floor sanitation. Ensures bottles and supplies are labeled appropriately to maintain compliance with all applicable SOPs and Guidelines.

Minimum Experience / Education:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

University Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from high school and two years of experience in laboratory work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school and two years of experience in laboratory work; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

  • Work requires knowledge of applicable laboratory procedures, tests, techniques and terminology.

  • Previous laboratory animal care experience is necessary to perform duties of position.

  • Strong attention to detail necessary.
