Salary: Competitive

The ideal candidate will have worked at a large electric utility or contract engineering firm designing high voltage transmission lines (115-kV and above) for 5 or more years. The candidate will have a firm understanding of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) as it applies to transmission lines. The candidate should have experience designing steel, wood and concrete structures as well as analyzing existing structures. Industry involvement in groups such as NATF, CEATI, EPRI and TDMMA and/or experience serving on an NESC committee are a plus. The candidate should have good written and verbal communications skills and be able to interact with office professionals and field staff.

Job Summary

Experienced professional Civil Engineer fully trained and competent to ensure high productivity in all conventional aspects and functions of civil, structural or transmission line engineering. Plans, schedules, conducts, coordinates, and directs detailed projects of moderate scope or part of a major project. Work requires sound judgment and a broad knowledge of standards and precedents in civil, structural and line engineering along with knowledge of the electrical engineering aspects of transmission line engineering. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, difficult coordination and difficult construction. Publication of engineering papers and articles in professional and trade journals is desirable. May perform design or storm damage related inspections.

Plans and performs the assessment of and rehabilitation of installed lines and structures or develops new designs. Performs analysis of existing facilities for changes in use and loading determining appropriate modifications. Performs cost estimates and economic analysis to support value engineering.

Supervisory Responsibilities

On a project, may supervise/coordinate the work of multiple discipline engineers and technicians, including contractor engineers and technicians.

Supervision Received

Supervisor provides the priority, scope of assignments, and general results expected. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems while independently performing most assignments.

Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)

Demonstrated working knowledge and proficiency in multiple technical areas related to transmission system achieved at Engineer-I and other areas including the ability to plan, schedule and coordinate. Communication skills showing the ability to give clear direction to others, negotiate, confront difficult and adverse situations such as may exist when dealing with staff, suppliers, land owners, state and federal agencies , railroads, public utilities, A/E firms and higher management.

Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard):

Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements

BS or MS degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution. Licensed Professional Engineer desirable. Membership in professional/technical societies is desirable. Demonstrated experience with electronic spreadsheets, standard structural engineering software, line engineering software and computer aided drafting software. Incumbent may be required to be medically qualified and willing to work in the field and climb structures as needed.
