Technical Manager – Chattanooga, TN

Where the Chemistry Happens

We are seeking a professional like you to be responsible for the ongoing technical support to the customer by driving technical service projects for the related industry. The major position responsibility is technical content, and the technical implementation of the strategic business plan which will achieve Strategic Business Unit objectives. In this role, you will interface with all key internal functional areas and ensure the minimization of duplicate work and sharing of knowledge and best practices through collaboration with global colleagues. You will work in close collaboration with the R&D function to deliver on new product development.

  • Leveraging your education in Chemistry, Engineering or other technical field combined with your experience in sales, marketing, product management or technical service, you will develop the vision, mission, objectives, and strategies for the Technical Service team, consistent with the Market segment strategy plans and objectives.

  • Contributing to your strong project management track record, you will prioritize the technical service resources required to achieve Strategy Plan objectives and effectively communicate technical priorities to achieve business objectives.

  • Working with initiative and a strong customer focus, you will enable growth by completing technical projects to service customer needs across the product range that BASF offers for architectural and decorative coatings.

  • Your proven leadership and team development skills will be essential as you manage a diverse team of professionals to achieve technical objectives, including Technical Specialists, Chemists and Technicians in a lab setting. You will develop and track goals through the HPO processes, coaching, development, and training.

  • Your strong business acumen and goal orientation will be valued assets as you ensure the knowledge base of formulation ingredients (products produced by BASF), technology, formulation and testing know-how for construction is advanced and successfully applied.

  • Using your excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation), you will monitor and report on Technical Service results and performance.

  • Successfully engaging across business lines and within a diverse team, you will collaborate and interact with Marketing, Sales, the Innovation Manager, Research & Development, and Manufacturing.

  • Your firm commitment to compliance and workplace safety will be evident as you will be accountable for occupational and other safety aspects, including EH&S and ISO compliance.

What we look for in you…

Education

  • BS degree in polymer or material science, chemical engineering, chemistry or a related field.

Experience

  • Superior knowledge in the use of latex and related compounds for coatings in the Paper Packaging, Paper Graphical and/or Floor Coverings markets.

  • Minimum 6 years of experience in the Paper Coatings and/or Floor Coverings market

  • Experience working within a hybrid (virtual and on-site) team across multiple disciplines including R&D, Technical Services, Sales, Marketing and Manufacturing

  • Direct experience managing a team of technical service personnel or laboratory preferred.

  • Ability to apply both fundamental principles and creativity to the development of new products and customer solutions

  • Excellent written, oral and listening skills, with ability to build relationships at all levels within BASF and externally with key customers
