Assistant City Prosecutor

JOB TITLE:                 Assistant City Prosecutor

CLASSIFICATION:   Exempt 

DEPARTMENT:        City Attorney

SUPERVISOR:          City Attorney

SALARY:                    $74,361 to $90,000 Annually

*GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                                                 *

Under the direction of the City Attorney, assist in the prosecution of all matters involving violations of the Cheyenne Municipal Code pending before the Cheyenne Municipal Court.  Interview witnesses, read through police reports, perform legal research to plan the prosecution of each case, present evidence, draft pleadings, respond to motions, and complete all other tasks necessary to prosecute all cases within the jurisdiction of the Cheyenne Municipal Court.

*PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                             *

  • Perform general legal research; utilize law libraries and other research mechanisms; and keep current on relevant legal issues.
  • Interview witnesses and prepare testimony for trial.
  • Review police reports and analyze lab reports and information.
  • Prepare legal and other documents, including briefs, pleadings, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, permits, letters, and memoranda.
  • Represent the City of Cheyenne in bench and jury trials before the Cheyenne Municipal Court.
  • Prepare and respond to appellant documents.
  • Reivew propose ordinance changes affecting criminal prosecution.
  • Stay informed on changes to state and local laws that impact prosecution and adjust policies and procedures accordingly.

*KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES                                                                           *

  • Relevant principles of criminal and constitutional law, codes, and regulations.
  • Relevant principles of federal, state, and local criminal procedure and municipal law.
  • Properly interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Communicate concisely and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

*QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB                                                                                *

Required:

An active Wyoming State Bar license.

Preferred:

One (1) to ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of law.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
