The HR Manager (HRM) is the strategic HR business partner overseeing employee/labor relations, talent acquisition, performance management, and total compensation activities at our Chicago and Chicago Heights, Illinois manufacturing facilities. This position works with site leadership, employees and HR colleagues to deliver value-added service in support of business objectives, improve work relationships, build morale, and enhance the employee experience. The HRM maintains an effective business acumen about the facilities’ operations, culture and priorities to deliver effective HR solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages complex employee relations issues and as needed, conducts effective, thorough and objective fact finding meetings

  • Provides performance management guidance to site managers (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions)

  • Provides compensation guidance to site managers (promotions, merit, adjustments, bonus)

  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees and maintenance of records, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance

  • Provides HR policy guidance and interpretation

  • Works closely with managers and the talent acquisition team to develop and implement effective talent acquisition strategies to attract a diverse pool of qualified candidates for the organization

  • Analyzes trends and metrics in partnership with the HR team or site leadership to proactively develop solutions

  • Provides guidance and input on site organizational design, workforce strength and succession planning for key roles

  • Identifies training needs and develops plans to address skill gaps

  • Manages site employee leave of absence and return to work process

  • Maintains knowledge of company benefits programs and works with the Benefits Team to provide guidance to employees

  • Develop and maintain progressive relationships with local union leadership and union committees

  • Interpret and administer collective bargaining agreements pertaining to wages, grievances, employee welfare, healthcare benefits,, union and management practices

  • Participates in labor proceedings, including grievance meetings, labor management meetings and bargaining sessions

  • Responsible for driving the entire grievance process

  • Collaborates with the Talent Acquisition Team to manage high volume hourly recruiting

    Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field; advanced degree in Labor Relations or Human Resources a plus

  • SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR a plus

  • A minimum of 7 years' demonstrated Labor Relations experience including a proven record of handling union grievances and participating in arbitration and other labor-related proceedings such as contract negotiations

  • 3 years' HR experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience working in a fast-paced and changing environment

  • Experience with high volume full-cycle talent acquisition

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, including compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, employee/labor relations, diversity, performance management, federal/state employment laws

  • Capability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, ordinances, and policies

  • Demonstrated ability to build trust among employees at all levels

  • Knowledge of US labor and employment laws

  • Ability to interpret labor contract language, draft bargaining proposals and agreements

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality working with highly sensitive information

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to communicate with employees at all levels

  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines

  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills, including demonstrated proficiency analyzing data

  • Proficient in MS Office and Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) systems
