National Archives and Records Administration Archives Technician in Chicago, Illinois

Summary This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Chicago Federal Records Program. The mission of the Federal Records Centers Program is to safeguard the nation's records, including citizen tax returns, Official Military Personnel Folders, passport applications, and National Security Information (NSI) by maintaining facilities that are fully compliant with regulations that protect records from fire, theft, pests, water damage and natural disasters. Responsibilities As an Archives Technician, you will: Perform standard records management activities in support of agency records management needs. Provide reference service for records in various filing systems and refile or interfile records in various filing system. Perform various duties related to the acceptance of incoming transfers of Federal records. Transcribe information found and prepare material for transmittal to the requesting agency or individual. Requirements Conditions of Employment The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume. A one year probationary period may be required. Must successfully complete a background investigation. Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency. If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so. Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S. This position requires candidates to pass a physical abilities test designed to measure candidates' ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires carrying 30-50 pound boxes like those found on the job. It also requires bending, squatting, and walking to reach the boxes in addition to climbing and balancing on a pulpit ladder up to 15 feet high. Qualifications You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-05, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Operating office automation programs for maintaining database information; AND Reviewing files or documents for completeness and compliance with established guidelines; AND Responding to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing. OR EDUCATION: You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school OR COMBINATION: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: Advancement to positions up to GS-5: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
