About the Department

GSECARS is one of three sectors managed by the University of Chicago Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. GSECARS is a national user facility for synchrotron radiation research in earth, planetary, and environmental science.

Job Summary

The Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at the University of Chicago seeks applications for a Programming Analyst to assist with software programming and computer support. The position will be located at GSECARS sector 13 of the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain web content for the GSECARS scientific research community.
  • Develop tools for collecting, processing, and cataloging scientific data and metadata.
  • Deploy and manage web-based applications for distributing scientific datasets.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows and Linux computers.
  • Upgrade, maintain, and troubleshoot ethernet networks.
  • Works with stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements for developmental programs. Receives a moderate/high level of guidance to design applications to meet University and business requirements.
  • Performs code testing on components and works to ensure that appropriate implementation standards are met.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

  • Bachelor\'s degree or Associates + 2 years of equivalent work experience.

Experience:

  • Experience with Node.js or similar JavaScript web framework.
  • Experience with Python programming for scientific and web applications.
  • Experience with networking and cybersecurity practices.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Experience with WordPress or similar web content management software.
  • Experience with web development using Apache, Linux, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting Windows and Linux computers.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.

Working Conditions

  • This position is based at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, with some remote work allowed.
  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work may be required for troubleshooting.
