This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Environmental Scientist for our Chicago, Illinois office. We will also consider candidates for our Peoria, Illinois office. Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Your Impact

  • Work with members of our Earth and Environment Team to provide direction and support existing client relationships.

  • Serve as Technical Lead or Task Manager for current and future projects, working with clients daily to set strategic direction and oversee project execution.

  • Independently manage and execute projects to meet compliance schedules.

  • Perform moderately complex technical tasks within a broad work-scope, and/or plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate project work for large work-scopes.

  • Prepare technical proposals and reports, in whole or in part, depending on the size and complexity of the document.

  • Demonstrate competency in a combination of areas including environmental compliance, field supervision, technical knowledge and task management.

  • Motivate, train and mentor subordinate staff assigned to his/her tasks or projects.

  • The position may entail approximately 70% office work and 30% field work on a variety of projects including industrial/commercial, state and federal sites involving environmental contamination.

  • Prepare components of investigation, remedial and monitoring reports, including work summaries, data summaries, calculations, summary tables, figures, and report text.

  • Prepare technical evaluations and recommendations.

  • Point person for subcontractors and directs junior level staff overseeing field activities.

  • Organize field work and assign tasks and provide guidance to staff specialists (Field Task Management).

  • Assist in subcontractor procurement.

  • Oversight of soil excavation, demolitions, and remediation system installations.

  • Review of contractor submittals including equipment, Work Plans, QA/QC plans and payment requests.

  • Will travel to project sites as required; will include some overnight travel.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, geology or environmental science

  • Minimum 5-7 years’ experience.

  • Must be proficient in MS Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Willingness and ability to interact with regulatory agencies, stakeholders and clients and develop effective teamwork relationships.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites as required.

  • Excellent time management skills and ability to track compliance deadlines.

  • The successful candidate must be able to work independently and show a high level of initiative and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency with technical and business writing, office automation, and communication software, technology, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including scoping and tracking hours and expenses for project work.

  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of various aspects of environmental related project, applying applicable regulations and policies.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when expressing ideas to a technical and non-technical audience.

  • Ability to manage and effectively communicate with subcontractors in the field.

  • Provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Geology or Environmental Science.

  • Applicable Professional Licensure/Certification or ability to obtain in 6-12 months.

  • Experience managing small to mid-size projects.

  • 40-Hour OSHA (29 CFR 1910.120) Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER).

  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.
