Job Description

AECOM is seeking a talented Senior Mechanical Engineer to be based in Chicago, IL.

Our Buildings + Places practice includes architecture, interiors, building and system engineering, urbanism, and planning (inclusive of landscape design), strategy +, economics, technology solutions, asset advisory, and cost and program management. This diverse team assists our clients from strategy through project realization, creating positive outcomes for those who occupy and use the buildings and environments we help to create. Our Chicago studio focuses on the Commercial/Corporate, Science and Technology, Higher Education and Federal market sectors. The Mechanical Engineer works in a highly collaborative environment on a wide range of projects. The ideal candidate will have a passion for designing building mechanical systems and supporting junior staff. The Engineer knows how to perform the technical calculations and design, understands the project requirements and the effort required to complete the work. The candidate should be able to design the projects from concept up to construction and delivery to the Client. Candidate should be capable of working independently with limited supervision to complete both small and large complex projects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal and external clients is required. Candidate must be well organized, be able to demonstrate critical thinking and can quickly recognize issues and be part of the solution.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanical engineering from conceptual design through construction administration and post-occupancy

  • Writing reports for internal and external purposes based on findings

  • Stays current on codes and technologies appropriate to the Mechanical discipline

  • Researches, develops, designs, specifies, and witnesses the testing of mechanical systems, equipment, components, and materials, applying principles and techniques of mechanical engineering

  • Organizes and conducts site visits for the purpose of data collection and evaluation of mechanical systems, equipment, components, and materials for projects with and without well-defined scopes

  • Develops designs within a BIM design environment

  • Develops, designs, and specifies equipment, components and materials for all building

  • Coordinating with multiple disciplines and acting as mechanical engineer point of contact to ensure that projects are delivered within budget and on schedule

  • Assist in proposal preparation in conjunction with the senior leadership of the office

  • Manage and work on multiple projects with other team members

  • Ensures discipline plans that are created meet overall project team requirements for project scope and schedule

  • Review team member's work for quality and recognition of training requirements

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or similar field +6 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong mechanical code knowledge including International Fuel Gas Code, ASHRAE standards, NFPA and other relevant codes and standards

  • Experience in designing complex hydronic systems, steam, VRF systems and sustainable designs. This includes cooling towers, water cooled chillers, air cooled chillers, hot water and steam boilers, geothermal systems, etc.

  • Experience in developing specification book

  • Instrumentation and controls design/engineering experience

  • Revit and CAD experience

  • Ability to use load calculation software such as Trace700 and other energy modeling softwares such as eQuest, IES is a plus.

  • Competent in all conventional aspects of mechanical engineering and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard mechanical engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.

  • Plumbing and Fire Protection system design experience

  • Medical gas piping design experience is highly preferred

  • Experience in the following markets: Healthcare, Laboratories, Mission Critical, Justice, and Higher Education projects

  • Experience with sustainable design and certification

  • Excellent communication skills: articulate, assertive, and confident

  • Creative thinker with effective teamwork skills

  • Analyze equipment energy use for optimizing systems selection

Additional Information

  • This will be a hybrid position; up to 2 days work from home

  • Due to the nature of this work, US Citizenship is required, sponsorship is not available for this position

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $125,000.00 - $165,000.00.
