About the Department

The Section of Genetic Medicine continues to shape the future of personalized medicine with successful research programs focused on the quantitative genetic and genomic science. The Section provides extremely valuable collaborations with investigators in the Department of Medicine who are seeking to develop new and more powerful ways to identify genetic risk factors for common, complex disorders with almost immediate clinical application. The Section of Genetic Medicine conducts impactful investigations focused on quantitative genetics, systems biology and genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology.

Job Summary

The Barreiro Lab is looking for a Staff Scientist to work on the analysis and interpretation of large functional genomic datasets for research projects aimed at understanding the contribution of genetic and non-genetic factors to population variation in immune responses. The Staff Scientist is expected to plan, execute, facilitate and advanced technical/scientific research projects.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops and tests processing and analytical computational pipelines (including novel empirical methods, computational, statistical methods, etc.), including field work in South America.
  • Collaborates with other researchers as appropriate.
  • Participates in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-authors scientific research manuscripts.
  • May supervise other research staff.
  • May present work at scientific meetings, and provide peer review of grant applications and scientific manuscripts.
  • The individual in this role will be involved in all aspects of the design, development, implementation, and analysis of research projects focused on population variation in immune responses.
  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.
  • Develops laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage, analyze and make recommendations on complex data sets for research.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Education:

  • Doctoral degree.

Experience:

  • Experience in developing bioinformatic analytical pipelines.
  • Experience with the analysis and interpretation functional genomics and population genetic data sets.
  • Experience with assisting in the training, a strong publication record, and a demonstrated commitment to excellence.
  • Supervisory experience.

Preferred Competencies

  • Knowledge in functional genomics and populations genomics.
  • Knowledge in single cell sequencing technologies such as RNASeq, ATACSeq.
  • Knowledge in bioinformatics methods and statistical tools for the analyses of genomic data.
  • Proficiency in scripting/programing languages (R/Python/Bash).
  • Analytical skills.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
