The Director of Manufacturing Development for the Instruments and Accessories group of the Ottava platform is accountable for the oversight and performance of engineering teams focused on developing components and manufacturing assembly processes and equipment for robotic instruments and accessories. This role requires an effective leader to drive the manufacturing strategy and ensure alignment with organizational objectives, emphasizing collaboration across disciplines to achieve high-quality manufacturing outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop a strong cadence of highly complex products in a heavily regulated environment and in close collaboration with marketing, supply chain, regulatory, quality, and clinical.

  • Lead a diverse and sizeable team of engineers, ensuring a results-focused approach.

  • Shape the strategic direction and operational priorities for Manufacturing Development.

  • Connect with team members and stakeholders to foster collaboration and aligned objectives.

  • Build and maintain partnerships within the R&D group, ensuring alignment across subsystem functions such as Product Design, Enabling Technologies, Systems Engineering, and Controls.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally within the Ottava business, particularly with Supply Chain, Quality, and Finances.

  • Engage with counterparts across the Johnson & Johnson network, specifically collaborating with the base Ethicon business.

  • Demonstrate effective leadership and influence within a matrix organizational structure, empowering teams to realize product goals across functional boundaries.

  • Exhibit impactful communication skills, facilitating effective program management support, including stakeholder management, budget tracking, schedule management, and program risk management.

  • Lead and develop a diverse team of engineers through coaching, mentoring, and effective performance evaluations.

  • Drive talent development initiatives to ensure the continuous growth of engineering staff.

  • Strong technical background, expertise in electro/mechanical devices, Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA) related to robotic instruments.

  • Knowledge of plastic and metal parts manufacturing processes development.

  • Oversee assembly and test processes, ensuring efficiency and quality.

  • Implement design control methodologies, including predictive design and adherence to design for six sigma principles.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Chemical, Physics or similar Engineering field with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Advanced degree with at least 8 years of experience preferred.

Qualifications:

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 10+ years of experience developing and delivering highly complex products in heavily regulated environments.

  • 5+ years of people management experience

  • Demonstrated maturity and senior leadership experience within a matrix organization.

  • Demonstrated expertise in design control, risk management, and regulatory compliance across industries such as medical devices, automotive, aerospace, and oil and gas.

  • Strong technical background, expertise in electro/mechanical devices, Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA) related to robotic instruments.

  • Knowledge of plastic and metal parts manufacturing processes development.

  • Implement design control methodologies, including predictive design and adherence to design for six sigma principles.

  • Hands-on involvement with solid judgment and decision-making skills.

  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills.

  • Proven track record of success in managing and developing others; ability to acquire and develop a diverse talent pipeline for the future.

  • Strong people management and organizational development skills; agility in leading through change and conflict resolution.

  • The ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

Preferred:

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with high-volume disposable products.

  • Prior MedTech and/or Robotics experiences.

The anticipated base pay for this role is $160,000.00 to $276,000.00.
