Cleveland Clinic American Sign Language Interpreter Trainee in Cleveland, Ohio

The Global Patient Services (GPS) American Sign Language Interpreter Trainee is a rotation-based 1-year part-time paid job-training program for recent graduates interested in gaining valuable healthcare experience in a creative, fast-paced nonprofit organization.

Interns are given the opportunity to experience the various tasks, situations, and responsibilities that professional healthcare interpreters encounter. In these hands-on settings, interns apply the knowledge and practice the skills necessary to perform their future jobs effectively.

ASL Interpreter interns will be taught critical skills to become professional ASL medical interpreters and guided toward RID (Registry of Interpreters for Deaf) certification including the NIC knowledge exam; preparation for NIC interview, and performance exam required within the year of training.

The intern will be assigned mentors who will support their development and on-the-job training. Hands-up experience will be completed with a qualified interpreter/mentor working with the intern.

The program is structured by rigorous assessment and increasing complexity of interpretation levels.

A caregiver in this position works Days/Evenings/Nights/Weekends, with variable hours.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Complete all onboarding and professional development trainings.

  • Go through interpreter assessments and quality checks.

  • Complete program rotations.

  • Help facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers.

  • Explain hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients; make appropriate referrals; serve as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes.

  • Perform duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation.

  • Adhere to hospital policies on customer relations and hospitality.

  • Understand the hospital's system of service delivery.

  • Written translations as required in patient encounters such as filling out forms and medical instructions, and medication schedules; administrative translations such as letters to patients, documents, and patient materials.

  • Support the office operations by answering the phone, taking requests, calling patients to confirm appointments, document encounters on the interpreter tracking system, do data entry, verify and schedule future appointments, when necessary, do general troubleshooting, filing and photocopying.

  • Utilize on-line computer systems such as Outlook, and other hospital software.

  • Work with special projects as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies (Complexity of Work):

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minima supervision.

  • Must be able to take appropriate action in a stressful environment.

  • Must exercise creativity and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external clients.

  • Must possess the ability to learn, use and understand clinical information systems as well as Microsoft Office and other PC applications.

  • Must be a confident, motivated self-starter and demonstrate flexibility, initiative, customer focus and the ability to handle stress.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma / GED or equivalent required.

  • Bridging the Gap education program completion required by the end of the year of training.

  • Foreign language (Arabic, Spanish, etc.) or American Sign Language (ASL) required.

  • National Language Certification - Successful Pass of Written Exams (dependent on LEP or ASL):

  • Foreign Language Certification : Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) by Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) by National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) certification or other healthcare interpreting certificate; preparation for oral exam required within the year of training.

  • ASL Certification : National Interpreter Certification (NIC) by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), including the NIC knowledge exam; preparation for NIC interview, and performance exam required within the year of training.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • Healthcare experience in a large organization preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires frequent data entry, standing and walking.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires dexterity sufficient to operate a computer.

  • May require the ability to operate various types of powered material handling equipment.
