Job ID 12538 Location Case Main Campus Full/Part Time Full-Time Regular/Temporary Regular Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE The Assistant Veterinary Services Manager is a member of the Animal Resource Center (ARC) Veterinary Services department and serves on the management team. The assistant veterinary services manager supports the Administrative Director with supervision and oversight of the veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants to ensure that operations within the ARC veterinary services department runs smoothly with the highest level of care and attention given to the animals and to research staff. Working under limited supervision, the assistant veterinary services manager supervises the daily activities of veterinary technicians and assistants in their assigned veterinary modules and assumes some of the duties of the manager in their absence. Responsibilities include oversight of technical and surgical services, disbursement of controlled drugs, auditing and maintenance of veterinary services related documentation and rodent health reporting. This position works with animals. This position is subject to compliance regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, the State of Ohio Veterinary Practice Act, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration regulatory guidelines, US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine regulations and other applicable regulatory guidelines. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Supervise the daily activities of assigned veterinary technicians and assistants, review work of technicians and assistants, reassign work when needed, determines problems and facilitates addressing performance and attendance issues. Monitor and enter daily attendance punches in attendance enterprise for veterinary technicians and assistants (15%) Monitor and review all aspects of veterinary surgical services, which includes scheduling, reviewing anesthesia induction and monitoring, surgical prep, and post-surgical veterinary nursing support. Provide training to veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants in appropriate aseptic surgical techniques, animal handling, restraint, various other techniques, and mandated record keeping. (12%) Oversee and facilitate appropriate labor to cover all animal health observations received in the previous 24 hours using a handheld or stationary tablet device. Interface with the Administrative Director and ARC veterinarians to determine and implement treatment or actions. (10%) Oversee, monitor, record, disburse, and destroy controlled substances in accordance with Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) guidelines and all applicable governing regulatory guidelines. Create schedules for drug auditing procedures. (8%) Evaluate veterinary services workflow and make recommendations to the Administrative Director to improve interaction between veterinary personnel, research staff and ARC operations personnel. Determine priorities and implementation of work assignments in the absence of the administrative director. (8%) Execute policies, procedures and methods developed by the management staff and ensure maintenance of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards for veterinary care. Review and assess competency and compliance of veterinary services staff working within the Animal Resource Center and provide feedback to the Administrative Director and internal compliance and training specialist. (6%) Analyze, in concert with the IACUC, issues of regulatory noncompliance as it relates to veterinary services. This includes surgical protocol variances, Semi-Annual and AAALAC inspection deficiencies and animal welfare issues.
