Responsibilities would include: Performing sample image acquisition and analysis Compiling data and reporting results Software development for Image gradient detection and measurement Example projects include: 1: Optical sample analysis and data reporting The goal of this project is to assist in the collection and correction by automated software the detection of defects in quartz glass samples. This will include interfacing with teams to understand their analytical needs, learning the use of Microscope system to acquire images and operation of software to detect and identify several types of objects from a compiled set of sample images. 2: Digitizing Glass Strain Measurement The goal of this project is to detect and measure optical image birefringence intensity and patterns within specific sample areas. The birefringence image is a phenomenon caused by a stressed transparent or translucent material such as glass will display when viewed in polarized light. This project will require the development of software to scale and analyze images of samples from a Polariscopes. Our goal is to digitize and collect data from these images for comparison and correlation to material changes and processes modifications. Qualification & Desired skills: Master's or PhD student/candidate in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, computer science, optical scientist or a related field. Independent research capability and good at working 'hands on' A programming background, capable in MATLAB or other software to compile code for image and data analysis is desired.
