Global Science and Technology Inc. Coral Reef Watch Scientist in College Park, Maryland

Global Science and Technology, Inc. (GST) is seeking aCoral Reef Watch Scientist.This position is in College Park, MD but has been approved for a hybrid work schedule.

The Coral Reef Watch Scientist will identify urgent research needs/scientific questions related to trends/patterns of coral reef bleaching and conduct independent scientific/statistical analyses that lead to multiple peer-reviewed publications on the topic of coral reef bleaching, the trends/patterns of reef bleaching through time, and prediction of bleaching via remotely sensed data.

Background: NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) uses remotely sensed data to identify physical-environmental stressors that may impact marine ecosystems and resources CRW utilizes satellite-derived sea surface temperatures and thermal anomaly algorithms to identify when and where coral reef ecosystems are at risk for coral bleaching. Coral bleaching predictions are used by reef managers, scientists, and the public to understand, document, and respond to the increasing threat of marine heat waves.

Position Summary:

Prospective employees must have strong scientific credentials in oceanography, and ocean biology, and must understand remote sensing of the oceans and coastal zones, and factors affecting coral reef health. The successful candidate will work directly with the Coral Reef Watch Coordinator to ensure satisfactory completion of tasks and determination of priorities. Duties and required responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Candidate will identify urgent research needs and scientific questions related to trends/patterns of coral reef bleaching through time and prediction of coral bleaching using remotely sensed data - requires comprehensive, up-to-date, and thorough knowledge of primary literature related to coral bleaching
  • Conduct statistical analyses of regional trends/patterns in remotely sensed sea surface temperatures to ascertain regional similarities/differences in rate, magnitude, and impact of climate change on coral reefs
  • Lead multiple scientific publications on the aforementioned topics; prioritization of paper topics will be determined via discussion with the coordinator and key partners
  • Contribute to the maintenance of Coral Reef Watch products, as well as the development of new experimental products identified via engagement with end users
  • Assist the Coral Reef Watch Coordinator to build and maintain domestic and international collaborations.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

Ph.D.-level Scientist/Marine Biologist/Analyst with a background in marine science, physical and biological oceanography, and/or coral reef ecosystem processes desired.

  • Must be proficient with data management, statistical analyses, interpretation of data, and writing up results of independent scientific analyses
  • Must have demonstrable experience independently writing multiple first-authored publications; preference is given to candidates with high-impact publications
  • Strong interpersonal skills are a must
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Travel to present results at international scientific conferences, workshops, and/or meetings would be required
