ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSE (Emergency) Fort Carson, CO

About the Position: This position with Department of Emergency Services, Evans Army Community Hospital, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Diagnoses disease, illness, disorder or injury, institutes treatment of patients.

  • Evaluates the urgent or emergent care aspects of patient care.

  • Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional or mental problems.

  • Provides a full range of urgent care and emergency services or crises interventions in the absence of the physician.

  • Writes prescriptions, orders the administration of medications, dispenses medications, and prescribes controlled substance in accordance with scope of practice for Advanced Practice Nurses.

  • Provides supervision and education to rotating nurse practitioner and physician assistant students rotating in the assigned clinical care area

  • Records entries into patients electronic medical record.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a current Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner (RN/NP) licensure with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions.

  • This position requires Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.

  • Pre-employment physical required and annually thereafter.

  • Required to lift up-to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

  • Required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.), unless exempted by a licensed physician.

  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.

  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.

  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

  • Is the position inclement weather essential (Incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions)

  • Is the position Mission Essential (The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather, or other emergency situations)

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or must be able to pass certification within 6 months of employment.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or must be able to pass certification within 6 months of employment

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS).

  • This position require Rotating Shifts (a work schedule where people move through a continuous cycle of working day, swing, and night shifts)

  • This position is required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays

  • Employee may be required to work on short notice to include nights, holidays, and weekends in support of related mission requirements

Basic Requirement for Advance Practice Nurse (Practitioner/Emergency):

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in Family Nurse Practitioner;is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).

Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes evaluating and providing care in an urgent care or emergency setting; Making decisions concerning acute care needs of patients and ordering an/or interpreting lab results; Diagnosing disease, illness and/or injury; and instituting treatment of patients by prescribing medications. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
