Job Description

The Chemist is part of a diverse and dynamic team of analysts supporting projects and operations in the Specialty Catalyst business. They will work with state-of-the-art instrumentation and equipment. The Analytical Sciences Team performs qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical analyses for a broad range of polyolefin catalyst and polymeric materials. The Chemist’s primary focus is R&D, Product Development, Scale Up, Licensee Support, Analytical Method Development, Transfer and Validation.

The Chemist has the opportunity to work across a broad range of specialties including, Chromatographic, Spectroscopic and Microscopic techniques.

The position is based on-site in Columbia, Maryland but will have the opportunity to interface with global customers and add value to Grace’s licensing business .

Responsibilities

  • Foster a safety-centric culture, fully engaging in all aspects of corporate and work group specific safety initiatives.

  • Perform routine and non-routine chemical, thermal, rheological, solution and molecular and rheological characterization including sample preparation, equipment operation and data analyses.

  • Install, operate, maintain and troubleshoot/repair complex analytical instrumentation and equipment.

  • Manage all aspects of assigned projects: work with researchers to execute experimental objectives, and with co-workers to coordinate workflows across all areas of the Analytical Sciences group to meet required project timelines.

  • Compile, document, and report data from experiments.

  • Compose laboratory documents such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

  • Demonstrate a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Perform laboratory housekeeping and procurement of operational supplies.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Chemistry

  • 3+years of experience in an analytical/technical laboratory or manufacturing environment

  • Proficiency in office-based computer software (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills

Physical Requirements and Environment

  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, balance, stoop, kneel, and climb stairs.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. (11 kg)

  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to protective eyewear, safety shoes, chemical, temperature and/or cut resistant gloves.

  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. in Analytical Chemistry

  • Experience handling air-sensitive and reactive materials

  • Use of Laboratory Information Management Software (LIMS) for data generation, storage and analyses

  • Demonstrated experience working with a dynamic team supporting Resin, and Catalyst development scientists & Engineers.

  • Willingness and ability to travel to global licensees to set-up and validate analytical methods.
