Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Data Science Intern for Summer 2025 . This position is onsite/hybrid located in Columbus, OH .

At Battelle, our Health Analytics division supports a wide range of clients including government agencies, academic institutions, and private industry in sectors such as healthcare, national defense, environmental science, transportation, and energy. We are dedicated to solving complex challenges with innovative analytical approaches. This position will help develop advanced statistical and biostatistical solutions for our government and commercial clients.

Responsibilities

  • Help organize, process, and analyze biomedical data

  • Complete computational analysis of large multi-omics datasets and mathematical modeling of complex biological systems, for example flux balance analysis.

  • Work with standard metagenomic and RNASeq bioinformatic workflows.

  • Work with high throughput scRNA-Seq, scATAC-Seq analysis using existing single cell analysis software like Seurat and established single cell pipelines.

  • Work with high dimensional multivariate and multi-modal data using techniques like Canonical correlation analysis, co-inertia analysis, partial least square analysis, factor analysis etc.

Key Qualifications

  • Must be currently pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s degree or PhD in statistics, biostatistics, data analytics, data science, or applied mathematics specializing in data analysis

  • Strong course work in statistical and biostatistical theory and methods

  • Course work or experience demonstrating algorithmic programming and data visualization skills in SAS, R, Python, or MATLAB

  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.

  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.

  • A positive attitude and willingness to take on technical challenges.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Must be available to work 40 hours/week.

  • Applicants for this position must be a U.S. Person, as defined by U.S. export control laws.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in machine learning and biostatistics.

  • Experience with epigenetics systems biology and/or epigenetics bioinformatics.

  • Experience running methylation and ChIP datasets.

  • Applicants available to work part- time during the school year will be given preference (only if applicable).

  • Familiarity with predictive pattern recognition applied to molecular profiling data and mathematical modeling of biological and disease processes, and demonstrable ability to interpret the output of such analyses in the microbiome-host context, are prerequisite.

  • Familiarity with analysis, interpretation and applied computational research on large multivariate molecular profiling datasets.

  • Experience analyzing large-scale human/other eukaryotic and microbiome molecular profile datasets (e.g., TCGA).
