The Hartford seeks a Director of Data Science within the Language AI Enablement to lead a team of Data Scientists and Data Engineers to develop NLP and Gen AI solutions across a range of strategic initiatives.

The Language AI Enablement team focuses serving the LOB Data Science teams to provide insights into unstructured text through a range of Methods whilst serving as Center of Excellence in Enabling peer teams through project work, education and best practices in NLP and Generative AI.

As a Director of Data Science, you will lead a team of Data Scientists and Data Engineers with varying levels of experience through the entire solution lifecycle partnering with cross-functional business and technical partners to understand business strategies and design, develop, implement, and evolve modeling solutions. We use the latest technologies, MLOps, and Agile delivery frameworks to build innovative and efficient solutions that maximize business value. This cutting edge and forward focused organization presents the opportunity for collaboration, self-organization within the team, influencing decision-making, and visibility as we focus on continuous business data delivery.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Columbus,) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Responsibilities: • Manage a team of Data Scientists and Data Engineers to develop, test, validate, and maintain robust tools using unsupervised techniques, evolve best practices with your partners in the research space • Support upskilling journeys tailored to the needs of your partners in close collaboration with your partners • Evolve best practices in the NLP and Gen AI space to guide the direction of our Data Science community• Lead or support cross-functional projects with your expertise to achieve financial objectives, solve business problems, and identify long-term opportunities that improve the customer journey • Remain current on research techniques and become familiar with state-of-the-art tools applicable to your function • Advance the department’s capabilities by creating and deploying long-term tools to continually evolve the practice of data science, with an ability to see the end-to-end solution • Collaborate and partner with data science and business stakeholders in a way that supports the vision and sustains a culture that treats analytics as a corporate asset and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams • Develop strategies to achieve targeted business objectives. Implement these strategies and follow through to successful conclusion• Participate in the talent management process for hiring, onboarding, training and development of staff • Collaborate with your leader to provide timely feedback on development and opportunities for your team

Qualifications: • 8+ years of relevant experience recommended • Master’s or Ph.D. in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Actuarial Science, Data Science, Computer Science, or a similar analytical field, or progress towards a relevant professional designation • Experience with managing Data Scientists and Data Engineers and providing guidance through solution development • Expertise in statistical modeling, inference, and building machine learning algorithms in Python • Expertise in Unix and Git • Expertise in the end-to-end solution lifecycle, from requirements gathering to monitoring and validation • Experience building solutions in cloud-native environments, such as Sagemaker• Able to translate complex technical topics into business solutions and strategies as well as turn business requirements into a technical solution • Expertise in supervised learning and unsupervised learning along with experience in deep learning and transfer learning is a plus• Experience with NLP or CV is a plus

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$148,000 - $222,000
