Definition

Under direction, is responsible for supervising others engaged in installing, maintaining, repairing, and removing industrial mechanical equipment; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

  • (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

    Supervises employees to include signing performance reviews, approving leave, and recommending disciplinary actions;

  • Organizes and supervises general machinery repairs and maintenance on equipment such as centrifugal pumps, gear reducers, centrifuges, motors, and related equipment;

  • Oversees the maintenance of plant equipment and plant structures that ensure movement of treatment flow for the processing of water or reclaimed water;

  • Assesses functionality of mechanical equipment by viewing information on the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system (e.g. wet wells, tanks, pumps);

  • Directs the designing, fabricating, and machining of required parts when unavailable for purchase;

  • Directs the maintenance of adjacent grounds, including seeding, planting, and mowing;

  • Arranges vacation schedules; recommends the hiring of maintenance staff;

  • Provides guidance, and training, to staff on personnel policies and work procedures, including safety protocols and safety awareness;

  • Assists in preparing annual maintenance budget;

  • Drafts reports and various types of correspondence;

  • Operates floodwall structures during flood events;

  • Utilizes computer software to complete work orders and timesheets;

  • Evaluates the performance of subordinates;

  • Generates monthly reports for management;

  • Maintains a variety of technical files;

  • Oversees the ordering of stock and parts for equipment;

  • May work around hazardous chemicals and noxious odors;

  • May complete safety permits;

  • May perform maintenance duties as required;

  • May inspect and report on the installation of equipment by contractors;

  • May supervise building maintenance work required at a water or water reclamation plant

  • May direct and supervise the maintenance of boilers and auxiliary equipment;

  • May supervise painting, carpentry and brick work and vehicle repair;

  • May direct and supervise all electrical and electronic repairs performed by work crews.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the twelfth school grade and (1) year of supervisory experience over the maintenance and/or repair of industrial mechanical equipment. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of completion of the twelfth school grade.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Supervision (open-book), Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Logic and Reasoning, Information Ordering, Plant Maintenance, Reading Plans, and Outlook, Word, and Excel 2016/2019.

Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
