Job Title:Custodian

Job Description:Performs routine maintenance and cleaning for school buildings in support of the education, extra and co-curricular programs of the school district.

Accountability: Reports to Facilites Director.

Equipment Used: Hand and small power tools, vacuum cleaner, hand and power cleaning equipment, telephone.

Environment: Inside: 90% Outside: 10%

Duties and Responsibilities: Except as specifically notes, the following functions are considered essential to this position.

-maintain appearance and cleanliness of floors and carpets in each assigned building, to include washing and waxing floors in each assigned building, as needed or determined by building principal or facilites director. -empty trash receptacles in each assigned building, and transfer to disposal location. -maintain clean and sanitary conditions, and supplies in restrooms in each assigned building. -maintain cleanliness of glass and mirror surfaces in each assigned building. -set and reset classrooms and common areas before and after activities, as required. -remove dirt, debris, snow and ice from walkways at each assigned building. -perform repairs of a minor or routine nature in and around each assigned building. -maintain and order supplies, as needed, within assigned budget amounts. -maintain illumination and safety equipment in each assigned building. Items of significance sould be reported to the facilites manager for repair. -monitor performance of equipment and components and alert department head to problems or suggest improvements. -maintain effective relations with building staff, students and the public. -maintain security, and monitor and limit access to building in accordance with established poilicies and procedures. -refer children to the Building Principal when disciplinary action may be required. -available for emergencies, or additional work and/or overtime, as required. -perform other duties, as assigned.

Cognitive and Sensory Requirements: Talking: Necessary for communicating with others. Hearing: Necessary for taking instructions from others. Sight: Necessary for doing job correctly and effectively. Tasting and Smelling: Smelling required to detect odors, such as natural gas, electrical smoke, etc.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: None

Other training, skills and experience requirements: HS Diploma or GED, preferred. Six (6) months to one year of custodial experience. Or, any combin tion of education and experience that demonstrates a knowledge of the tasks and functions of the job. Ability to work in environments with different needs, and understand and follow directives.

Summary of Occupational Exposures: Floor and bathroom cleaners, cleaning agents and solvents, heating fuels. Incumbents may be exposed to extremes of heat, cold, and wet weather.

Other Considerations and Requirements: Should be physically able, as job includes lifting and stair climbing. Employee must be able to perform various task as required in maintaining school buildings. Employee follows a written or verbal work schedule and is typically able to work at his/her own pace.

Job often entails routine and repetitive tasks that, once learned, can be executed under general supervision. Work may be checked by facilites manager to insure accuracy and completeness of assignments.

Incumbent has no authority for disciplining students during school hours.
