Minimum Qualifications Journey Level Minimum Qualifications:Four years of experience in mechanical and/or electrical trades; AND possession of a Wastewater Treatment certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in the grade required for operation; AND possession of a Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health. Trainee 2 Minimum Qualifications:Three years of experience in mechanical and/or electrical trades. Trainees must obtain a Wastewater Treatment certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation AND obtain a Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health during their probationary period. Trainee 1 Minimum Qualifications:Two years of experience in mechanical and/or electrical trades. Trainees must obtain a Wastewater Treatment certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation AND obtain a Water Treatment Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health during their probationary period. All candidates must obtain a Class B Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles during their probationary period. Failure to obtain the appropriate driver’s license during the probationary period will result in termination.
Duties Description Service Area Mechanics are responsible for the maintenance and operation of all buildings and NYS Thruway Authority owned equipment at an assigned service area complex, in accordance with established preventive maintenance schedules and standards. They periodically check and service all types of building equipment and systems, perform minor, and occasionally major repairs and adjustments to equipment as required. Additional duties may include the following: Maintains and services water treatment systems, wastewater treatment systems, ventilating and heating equipment, cooling towers, boilers, emergency generators, elevators, air compressors, electric motors and other electrical and mechanical systems and equipment and related controls. Repairs doors, windows, vents, drains, railings and other building components. Controls emergencies such as propane gas and gasoline leaks and stoppages, electrical malfunctions and other hazardous conditions.Coordinates major repairs, installation of new equipment, rearrangement of existing equipment and other projects requiring agency personnel. Supervises service area equipment operators by instructing staff in proper operating and maintenance procedures and techniques; assigning tasks; and reviewing work for adherence to established standards and schedules.Maintains inspection records and stock part identification, break down, and reports. Operates tractor plow in snow removal operations.

Tuition Assistance Program which reimburses 90% of tuition costs for approved courses up to 15 credit hours per year.New York's 529 College Savings Program, which provides New York families with a tax-advantaged way to save for college.Flexible Spending Program, which allows employees to set aside pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible health care and dependent care expenses. Service Award Payments - Upon completion of 10 years of Authority service, eligible employees will receive a 10-year Service Award Payment. Payments are then awarded every five years as noted in the contract until 30 years of Authority service is reached. Service Awards have a positive impact on retirement.
